My pregnant dog is 67 days, nesting, not eating, no labor. What to do?

She needs to be eating something, or she will have very little energy for the whelping. Take her to the vet for xrays, then you'll know the size of the litter and will know if she's having trouble or needs a c section. While there, ask for cerenia injections for the next few days, as this is a fantastic anti-nausea drug that has all kinds of benefits. In this case, I'm hoping it will get her eating for you. If she had a dead pup last litter, that tells me she may be dealing with some uterine inertia during labor, and could benefit from calcium or oxytocin injections, but this requires your working with a reproduction veterinarian through this process. It could be that Bailey is getting ready to go into labor. Dogs often lose their appetite before giving birth, but it is concerning that she is crying. It may be labor pains, however. I would monitor her, and take her temperature rectally. A dog's normal temperature is between 101-102.5F. Once it drops below 100F, she will deliver puppies within 24 hours. Should 24 hours pass after the temperature drop with no sign of puppies, Bailey will need to see a vet immediately.

It sounds like Pixie could be in the first stage of labor, which can last up to 18 hours. Now if 18 hours have passed since you first starting seeing these signs, she needs to see a vet now. French bulldogs frequently need help giving birth in the form of a c-section, with over 80% of their litter being delivered this way. It's very important to take her into a vet if 18 hours have passed, as leaving her without veterinary treatment can and has lead to the death of the puppies and potentially the dog. If she is 66 days I would definitely recommend seeing a vet as soon as you can. It’s possible that she is in stage one of labor, but at 66 days she is past the average gestation length and it’s possible that she is having difficulty with labor or that there are problems with the puppies. A vet can check to see if she is in labor and can also determine whether or not the puppies might be in distress. If you start to see active contractions your should see a puppy within 30-69 minutes and she should not go more than 4 hours between puppies.

Average gestation period is anywhere from 58-72 days with an average of 65 days, so technically she is not overdue, just longer than the average. I would continue to monitor since she is not showing any signs of being in distress or trouble. If she goes past day 72, then certainly it is worthwhile getting her seen by your vet to ensure the puppies are still healthy and to consider a c-section. Hello. Often the milk will not start flowing until a dog actually enters the stages of labor. The act of giving birth & the hormones that are released at parturition will stimulate milk to come down. If no milk is seen after the puppies are born, Simba may need an injection of oxytocin, but this would be very unusual.
