My dog is 70 days pregnant. Is she overdue if puppies are moving?

My male husky got out of his crate and got my female pregnant on October 15th. Today would be day 70. Her temp has been at 99.1 since yesterday morning. Vet confirmed it is a real pregnancy (4+ pups) and not a phantom one. Puppies are still moving around. Should I take her to the vet given that she’s almost technically overdue?

Average gestation period is anywhere from 58-72 days with an average of 65 days, so technically she is not overdue, just longer than the average. I would continue to monitor since she is not showing any signs of being in distress or trouble. If she goes past day 72, then certainly it is worthwhile getting her seen by your vet to ensure the puppies are still healthy and to consider a c-section.

If you start to see active contractions your should see a puppy within 30-69 minutes and she should not go more than 4 hours between puppies.

Dogs will gestate anywhere between 58 and 68 days. Typically, the progesterone level will drop to around 2ng/ml about 48 hours prior to labor and then again to 1ng/ml about 24 hours before labor. You should also monitor her temperature. Labor typically follows within 24 hours of a drop below 100 F. If your vet is not concerned, be patient. Bella is almost there!

At 51 days you still have a week of anticipation. Gestation in dogs is 56 to 68, in rarest cases 70 days. The average is 63 to 65 days, which means most dogs will whelp between 63 and 65 days. Do keep your appointment with the vet as you may want some x-rays done to know how many puppies your dog will have. This will take a lot of worrying away as you know when whelping is done. Do not rely on temperatures, it works in some dogs and does not in others.

When your dog get a big abdomen., take her to your veterinarian for an x-ray or ultra sound pregnancy exam. The vet can then see how many puppies she will have and approximately when and how big they will be. 4) The incidence of a c-section is rare , so I would not worry about that now.
