Why is my purebred Pomeranian so much taller than her small parents?

Pet's info: Dog | Pomeranian | Female | 1 year and 10 months old | 12 lbs

I wonder why my Pomeranian is taller than her parents, her parents are pure breed Pomeranian with pedigree, so I don’t understand why she is not small like her parents

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. This happens for the same reason that two short people can have a tall child. There may have been a larger dog in the family tree somewhere and your Shakira happened to get those genetics. Also, are you certain her parents are who you think they are? Is it possible there was an accident and there is a different father than you thought?

Either way, Shakira is beautiful and looks healthy and that is what's important!

Height is directly related to genetics. Even in humans you will see relatively short parents sometimes with tall children. Sometimes height skips a generation meaning that one or more of the grandparents (or even great-grandparents) may have been taller and passed a part of that gene down to the each parent. Those parents coming together to make babies probably each passed that part of the gene to Shakira making her taller. It is not really that strange of a phenomenon.

It could be her genetics if her mother or father were not as tall or the height issue could be related to a dysfunction of the pituitary gland which controls growth. Why does my Shih Tzu puppy have short hair when both parents are long?

It is possible to have shorter hair depending on their genetics. For instance (just an example), if long hair is a dominant gene and and short hair is a recessive gene then there is a chance for a puppy to have two of the recessive genes and end up with shorter hair. As long as you know there were not any other intact males around while she is in heat (the puppies can have different fathers), then I expect that she is full blooded and I would not worry about her shorter hair! She is just special! :) As she gets older, her hair may get longer.

Hello. I would agree that the female does not have the typical confirmation of a border collie. This may indicate a possible congenital problem, a type of dwarfism, but most likely there were two fathers for this litter. Because of the way a female dog ovulates, you could have two different males inseminate a single pregnancy. The only other option is the breeder intentionally duped you. I am wondering if she could be a different breed then you were told if you feel she is so small. As long as she isn't sick then it is just her and she may not get so big. That being said, she could absolutely have a different father/breed than Nala and that would give different genetics of course. There are forms of dwarfism in cats as well as other growth problems. So if it seems to get worse with age or she is not walking well, certainly have her checked out by a vet. Best wishes to you all!
