Best food for my Pit/Lab puppy? Can I give him cooked chicken or beef?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach! The food I mostly recommend is Science Diet. I have used their food for over 20 years in my own pets and have never had a problem with their food. My own dog was on their food for 20 years and did very well. He maintained an excellent body condition, hair coat was amazing and he loved very long. I contribute his longevity to a good diet and good care as well. If you are opposed to Science Diet, I also recommend Royal Canin, Natural Balance and Purina One. There are so many foods out there and it is easy to get caught up in the marketing game of "natural", "organic" and "grain free". As long as your dog is on a well balanced and complete diet is what matters the most. I typically recommend feeding a puppy food for the first 12 months and then switching to an adult food from 12 months to 7 years of age. Beyond 7 years I recommend a senior formula. Milo should have teeth by now so either a starter puppy food from a high quality brand like Royal Canin, Eukanuba or Hills Science diet . Make sure it's a puppy Large Breed food as well. Natural Balance is also a relatively good brand of food as well. You may have to do canned food for a few weeks if puppy has a hard time with the dry kibble. Or moistening he dry kibble with a little bit of water is a good alternative to canned food. Best of luck with your new puppy! Do not feed table scraps or human foods. Do not feed grain free foods as those can cause heart disease. Royal Canin, Hills Scoence Doet and Ians are all good brands to feed.

It's quite a difficult question as a lot depends on what you would consider affordable. Bearing in mind that more expensive foods usually work out similar as you end up feeding less. Personally for puppies I would try and give them the best at least at the start. I really like royal canin or alternatively Hill's made for the breed size.

Yes, there are different brands of food you can try for Thumper. I recommend Royal Canin, Purina ProPlan, Hill's Science Diet, or Iams. Purina One is also a good brand of supermarket food. At his age, he should be fed three times a day so you are doing that correctly! As for the amount, the bag will list how much food he should get daily, so use that as a guideline for feeding him and divide it into three equal portions. Make sure as well he is up to date on his deworming treatments because that can make him gassy as well. Should you decide to switch foods, do it slowly so avoid GI upset. Mix together the new food and the old, and over the course of two weeks, gradually increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food until he is eating the new food only. Finally, he should stay on a puppy food until he is 12 months old. I hope this helps!

I do not recommend Orijen at all. It's grain free, and grain free food is a dangerous fad in dogs. Vets are seeing an increase in dogs developing dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs fed grain free food, and the FDA is investigating that link. Grains are good for dogs, and there is absolutely no scientific proof or any study that has proven grains are bad for dogs. I would feed Willow a brand like Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Feed according to their instructions, and make sure it's a puppy food. Best of luck,

Hello, and thank you for your question. Blue sure is a handsome boy! If you keep him unneutered until at least 1 year old, this will let him grow to his fullest potential. I would also make sure to feed him a puppy-specific diet until he is at least 1 year old, and seek out a large-breed puppy formula, which helps to prevent hip problems as he grows. I wouldn't worry as much about meat - the most important nutrients for growth at his stage are fat and calories (which are found in puppy formulas). Look for an AAFCO statement on the food you buy, that says the diet is formulated for growth stages. I hope this helps, and that Blue is happy and healthy!
