Yes, dogs can have it. To treat acute diarrhea, 0.5 mL/lb (1 US teaspoon for every 10 pounds your dog weighs) can be given every 4 to 6 hours for 5 days. The dosage can be higher depending on how severe the symptoms are and other contributing factors, with a maximum recommended dose of 0.9 mL/lb to be given every 6 to 8 hours. Shake the bottle well before use.

The dosage for Pepto in dogs is one teaspoon per ten pounds, so 1.5 teaspoons would work. I recommend getting a crate and putting him in it when no one is home to prevent him from getting into the trash when left supervised. Alternatively, you can shut him in a bathroom or other small room, just be sure there isn't anything in there he can reach and eat.

Tums is not likely to help with the diarrhea. His problem is not the stomach, it is the colon (large intestines). If the diarrhea persists for more than 24 hours (despite the Pepto) then you need to get him to a vet for an exam. Also, if is not eating or feeling otherwise unwell he should see a vet.

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If your puppies are having mild diarrhea that has not lasted over 6 hours, eating fine and acting normally with no vomiting, then it can be safe. However, it is just a band aid and does not fix the underlying problem as to WHY they are having diarrhea. If the diarrhea has persisted longer than a few hours, the puppies are not eating, they are vomiting or lethargic, I would not give Pepto Bismol. I don’t recommend pepto in dogs. It doesn’t seem to do much and some dogs are sensitive to the aspirin component. You can do boiled chicken and cooked white rice, toast without butter, apple sauce, and other bland white human foods. If he isn’t back to normal in a day or two, it would be best to have him checked out by a vet.

Thank you for submitting your question. I do not recommend giving Pepto Bismol to a cat. It contains an aspirin type compound that they have difficulty metabolizing. It is best to determine the underlying cause of the GI upset and treat that specifically. I hope that helps!
