Is it safe to give my cat Pepto Bismol for an upset stomach?

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If your puppies are having mild diarrhea that has not lasted over 6 hours, eating fine and acting normally with no vomiting, then it can be safe. However, it is just a band aid and does not fix the underlying problem as to WHY they are having diarrhea. If the diarrhea has persisted longer than a few hours, the puppies are not eating, they are vomiting or lethargic, I would not give Pepto Bismol. The standard liquid Pepto Bismol formula (17.5 mg of bismuth subsalicylate per milliliter) is administered at a rate of 0.5 ml per pound or 1 U.S. teaspoon for every 10 pounds of a dog’s body weight. Therefore your dog would get 8.5 mls of the standard liquid medicine.

I can't say that it's safe to give her, and you have to be very careful giving human medications to young kittens, as you can accidentally do great harm. In addition, it may not be the right treatment for her diarrhea. For example, diarrhea in kittens can be caused by intestinal worms, which Metamucil will do nothing to help with treatment. You need to take her into a vet as soon as possible, as persistent diarrhea is dehydrating. The vet can diagnose what is causing her diarrhea and can treat her for it. Best of luck.

Actual Kao-pectate (which contains only kaolin and pectate) is safe to use. PetCo sells it as NutriVet Antidiarrheal Liquid for cats. On the other hand the brand name “Kaopectate” is not actually kaolin and pectate but is made of the same ingredients as pepto-bismol (bismuth subsalicylate). This is absolutely TOXIC to cats and is not recommended under any circumstance. If you’d like to try something over the counter for diarrhea, and can’t get the NutriVet or aren’t sure, I’d much rather you try out a probiotic like Purina Fortiflora. Of course, if these remedies aren’t working, it’s time to see your vet to rule out parasites, infections, or inflammatory bowel disease. Best of luck to you and Walker!

I would not recommend Pepto bishop for diarrhea, as the ingredients are often not well tolerated in dogs. You can feed some canned pumpkin or boiled chicken and rice to see if that helps but if it's not improving she may need to see your vet for treatment.
