Is Pepcid safe for dogs with kidney failure, despite human warnings?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 14 years old | 5.4 lbs

Hi. My dog is in Kidney failure and his vet gave him Pepcid. But, I read on the package that people with kidney disease should not take it. Would this be different for dogs?

Hi there! I'm not sure what the reasoning is on avoiding it with kidney disease in humans, but I can tell you that it's used extremely commonly in dogs with chronic kidney disease without any problems. It's a very safe drug in general, and can often be helpful for patients with this problem because kidney failure can cause excessive acid production in the stomach. The Pepcid helps with this.

Pepcid (famotidine) can be used safely in cats. Discuss a safe dose, based on Mocha's weight, with your veterinarian. If you give it in pill form, be sure to offer a drink afterwards to wash it down. Famotidine is most effective when given on an empty stomach.

It is common to use Pepcid in animals in kidney failure. I would discuss dosing with your Vet. I would also ask for anti-nausea medications like reglan or cerenia. Pepcid is just an antacid.

I would not recommend this - the tablets could cause irritation if given subcutaneously, or could lead to infection. I would recommend talking to your veterinarian about where to purchase injectable Pepcid (also called famotidine). Your veterinarian may be able to order a bottle for you, or may recommend trying to give the medication orally.

In the long term, there is a thought the chronic famotidine use may decrease some nutrient absorption and lead to excessive gastric acid production with possible esophageal acid reflux if it is discontinued. Pepcid is safe to give daily, and I've used it for years in some cats with no problems. However, it's important to have an actual diagnosis before proceeding with this plan. Not all gastrointestinal problems are improved with Pepcid - it merely reduces the amount of acid in the stomach, so it doesn't help with all problems.

What medicines are best for dog stomach ulcers with kidney disease?

In the past in the UK we used to prescribe Antepsin syrup or tablets for gastric ulcers, in addition to analgesic medications (no antinflammatories !) and antiacids. It used to be a human medication so needed informed consent from the owners and compliance to the cascade (it could be used in cases where no other authorised animal medication was available). Unfortunately then there was a shortage in his availability and other medications had to be used on their own.. Antepsin, or sulcralfate, created a barrier between the ulcer and the acid content of the stomach. The antiacids now are still used, and their active drug is either omeprazole and/or ranitidine.

It is hard to say without knowing the milligram strength of the tablets you are giving. Overall it is a very safe drug and it should be fine for you to give the other half. If Oliver is not feeling well after that second dose you should really get him back to your vet for a check-up.

Can I give my dog Pepcid for stomach issues? How much and how often?

Yes, you can give 10mg of Pepcid (famotidine). It should be given once a day at the same time each day. You can give it for 14 days straight and then stop. Hopefully the problem will have resolved by then.
