Can I give my dog Pepcid for stomach issues? How much and how often?

In the long term, there is a thought the chronic famotidine use may decrease some nutrient absorption and lead to excessive gastric acid production with possible esophageal acid reflux if it is discontinued. However, most internal medicine specialists still preferentially recommend famotidine over other antacids (such as omeprazole/Prilosec) for chronic use as it is a bit more "mild" in its mechanism of action. I know you mentioned changing foods, but consider discussing a diet trial with a hydrolyzed "hypoallergenic" diet with Brody's vet. If he has a degree of a food allergy or inflammatory bowel disease causing his vomiting and skipping of meals, these hydrolyzed diets fed for 2-3 months can remove a lot of antigenic stimulation in the GI tract and potentially prevent a lot of GI upset.

Pepcid is safe to give daily, and I've used it for years in some cats with no problems. However, it's important to have an actual diagnosis before proceeding with this plan. Not all gastrointestinal problems are improved with Pepcid - it merely reduces the amount of acid in the stomach, so it doesn't help with all problems.

Vomiting can happen in dogs after having anesthesia for being spayed, but it's good that she ate an hour later. If she ate and was able to keep the food down, then her stomach has likely settled. It's never recommended to give any human OTC medications without direct supervision from a vet, so I would not recommend giving Pepcid ac to her. If she does vomit again, you can withhold food for 12 hours, then feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.

The dosage for Pepto in dogs is one teaspoon per ten pounds, so 1.5 teaspoons would work. I recommend getting a crate and putting him in it when no one is home to prevent him from getting into the trash when left supervised. Alternatively, you can shut him in a bathroom or other small room, just be sure there isn't anything in there he can reach and eat.

A better choice for an antacid would be Pepcid. You can discuss it and get a dose based on Bella's weight from your veterinarian. Hello. I am concerned that with a bloated stomach & walking stiff, he is in some discomfort. If he is not retching, trying to vomit, breathing fast or hard, & his gums are moist & pink, then he may just be very gassy. You can give him a 5 mg dose of Pepcid ( famotidine), & see if this helps in an hour or so. But if he is no better, or he begins to show increased signs of distress, you may need to get him to a veterinary ER. If he seems relieved of the bloating, though, then repeat the Pepcid in 12 hours.
