My paralyzed dog has a red, sore anus from incontinence. What helps?

Either is possible - diarrhea can cause irritation and 'itchiness' of the anus and perianal area. Baxter's anal glands could also be full since they are normally emptied during defecation and his stool probably hasn't been bulky enough to express them. If his anal area looks irritated you could apply a thin layer of Vitamin A+D ointment or Petroleum jelly to the area, but if he keeps scooting I'd recommend taking him in to have his glands checked.

Hello. Yes, you can use this, or a little hydrocortisone cream, but I do not think it will really solve this problem. If he is straining due to hard stool, you can try adding a 1/2 teaspoon of Metamucil (psyllium), or a tsp. of canned pumpkin twice a day to his food to soften his stool. If his BMs are fairly normal & he is physically having problems passing stool, then this might be an arthritis issue. The best thing to do is to see your veterinarian to make sure there is not some other problem with the area, such as an anal gland infection, or even possible cancer. Unfortunately the only thing that will prevent this is to take him outside often and/or change his pee pad/diapers regularly and often. Shave the hair around the penis and on his belly in front of the penis and wash the area when he peed on it , at least twice daily, You need to dry the area well and then you can apply plenty of vaseline to keep the urine from coming into contact with the skin. If the inflammation is severe, if there are raw skin lesions or if you cannot completely remove the crusts and masses you will need to take him to a vet to examine him.

Rather than hemorrhoid cream, I suggest some triple antibiotic ointment to help it heal. You may have nicked him with the scissors, which is really easy to do, even when you're being very careful. You can use something like the Tucks pads for hemorrhoids to clean it, then apply the antibiotic twice a day. If it doesn't improve significantly in the next day or two, I suggest getting him in to see your vet as he may need additional medication or treatment. If you get him groomed, make sure to ask them to do a sanitary clip, which will trim the hair very short around his anus to help prevent this from happening again in the future Your vet may also offer a similar service in between grooming appointments. If you want to do it at home, get a pair of clippers and use a guard to keep from cutting him.

This red and inflamed area is likely due to Cooper rubbing his bottom on the floor and should resolve, as long as he is not licking at the area. This ointment can be found online quite eaily. You can stimulate him to defecate by tickling his anus with an ice cube or q-tip with vaseline on it. I would make him defecate twice daily so he doesn't get constipated. If needed you can give him a soapy water enema to get him to go. If he still has anal tone like you are seeing he still has some control over the defecation. I recommend trying acupuncture to improve the fecal incontinence. Also doing hydrotherapy can maintain his function longer so you may want to find a veterinary acupuncture and rehabilitation veterinarian in your area. Red’s anus does look irritated and I can see some redness on the underside of his tail as well. He might be licking due to irritation from full anal glands, parasites or allergies. I would recommend having your vet examine him and check his anal glands. They may want to check a stool sample as well. Oral or topical medications might help. I would recommend putting an e-collar on to prevent licking until you can get to the vet.
