My paralyzed dog has crusty penis skin. How do I treat and prevent?

I would suggest having Zach's anal glands checked as they me be full or impacted since he can't defecate normally. You can also use a baby diaper cream such as desitin to help ease the area as long as he cannot lick it off.

Poor Bruno!! Distemper is terrible disease and he is lucky to have survived. The best way to prevent pressure sores and scratches is to keep him on soft surfaces and make sure he is rotating every two hours. One effective way to do this is to have a sand pit on the property. You can enclose the sandy area, which will give him enough room move around. Another option is to bandage over the hips and other areas that tend to get scratched. You can bandage with extra padding (like roll cotton) to help keep him from getting pressure sores. You can also put a t-shirt over the hind end to help protect it. However, you would need to change the bandages everyday and they can be difficult to keep from slipping. I hope that helps and all is well with Bruno.

This could be a bacterial skin infection. If any urine gets trapped on his fur or any moisture, this can predispose them to infection. I would recommend using a spray such as malacetic conditioning spray and apply to the area until resolved. I am not sure why you are putting the wrap on him (as a diaper?) but it is possible that you are wrapping it too tight. You should also let the penis "air out" regularly, ie take the wrap off and let him run around "free". It is also important to wash him regularly as any urine on the skin causes skin problems, ie causes a diaper rash. You can also, after washing and drying him well, put some vaseline on the skin around his penis, so the urine does not get to the skin that easily.

This could be dried smegma, dirt, or dried crusty blood. You may want to wash it off carefully with warm soapy water, then rinse well and inspect the penis. If the skin looks spotty, or injured or is bleeding you should take Mutt to a veterinarian for an exam. Watch Mutt urinate. There is nothing you can put on his skin for protection but you should be wiping him off with a wet wash cloth or a hypoallergenci baby wipe every time he urinates. Keep the area clean and dry. If he is developing a rash, you may ask your veterinarian about a medicated shampoo or wipe to use at home. I hope this helps.
