Best way to pad train a new puppy with an older dog already home?

There are many different options and opinions on the best way to house train - I personally think using a crate is best and quickest. Basically you have pup in the crate (no pee pad) whenever you aren't actively watching him AND take him out to go to the bathroom every hour, after eating, after drinking, after waking, after playing, or any other times he pauses for a second. The rest of the time, you're either 100% focused on him, or he's in the crate. As long as the crate is the right size (easy for him to turn around, but not a whole lot bigger), he won't eliminate in his resting place. if you go with the play pen method, it relies on him just figuring it out a bit more and may or may not work as well or quickly. Instead of having a clear resting place it's also a potty and meal place - some dogs do great with this and others not so much.

If you want her to go potty outside only, I would remove the potty pads as this is likely just confusing her. Giving her the option of both may confuse her as to where the appropriate place to go potty is. Instead, taking her out every 1-2 hours, and establishing a routine of going out after eating, drinking, playing, waking up, etc, can help get her used to the fact that outside = go potty time, along with your treats and rewards. If she has an accident inside, moving her outside to let her finish is best, as well as using an enzymatic cleaner to remove any residue and discourage going potty there again. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Simba. Take him to the potty pad frequently and give him a command such as "go potty!". It doesn't matter which phrase you use, just be consistent and say it every time. When he goes, give him a treat right there and lots of praise. It will take lots of repetition, but he will catch on. Do not punish him for accidents. If you catch him going elsewhere in the house, tell him "no!". Quickly take him to the potty pad and give him his command. I hope this information helps!

I would recommend crate training Bear. I would keep Bear in the crate when you cannot keep 100% watch on him. When he comes out of the crate I would then walk him or put him on the pee pad (depending on where you want him to go). If he goes then I would play with him and once you have to turn your back he goes back in the crate. If he does not go to the bathroom when you take him out of the crate I would put him back in for 20 minutes and try again. Remember he is only 3 1/2 months old so he will still have accidents. If you catch him going to the bathroom tell him no and take him and put him where you want him to go and praise him for going. If you just see the accident then clean it up and do not say anything to him. Bear should only be crated for 3 hours right now at a time. How ever many months he is plus 1 is the number of hours you can leave him in at a time. A crate should be big enough for him to stand up, sit down and turn around. If you do not want to use a crate do the same idea with the bathroom. The crate is a very safe option and dogs end up loving their crates, it's their safe house. It can be confusing to train a puppy to go in the house (which is what using a pee pad really is) and also to do her business outside. She can certainly be out long enough to go in all types of weather. You can hold an umbrella over her if necessary.

The key to potty training is to offer Gracie lots of chances to go where you want her to go. She'll need to be supervised while in the house until she gets the hang of things. This means someone needs to be actively watching her, not just in the room with her. After she eats, after she plays, and after she sleeps, take her over to the pee pads and give her whatever command you'd like to use for toileting. If she's close to the edge, pick her up and place her in the middle, or put a few training pads together to make a bigger area. Once she does go, praise her lavishly, and give her a treat. If you catch her peeing or pooing where she's not supposed to, then simply make a loud noise to stop her, pick her up and put her on the pee pads and give her the command. If you catch her after she's already gone elsewhere there's no point in punishing her as she won't associate what she's done with the punishment. Remember she's just a baby and she's still learning, so be consistent and offer her lots of opportunities. Good luck!
