Can my overweight pug eat boiled sweet potato without gaining weight?

Feeding homemade diets can be perfectly fine as long as the diet is very carefully balanced with appropriate vitamin and mineral supplements. Dogs can develop a variety of conditions related to different nutritional deficiencies. If you are considering a home cooked diet for Cowboy, look into balanceit.com. This website has a number of different recipes created by boarded veterinary nutritionists and they also sell the necessary supplements for each recipe. Weight loss in pets is similar to weight loss in people. They need reduced calories and more exercise. Pavi only needs dog food, not the roti. Read the instructions on her bag of food, and feed her according to that. No treats, no roti, nothing else. Just dog food in the morning and night. Walk her at least twice a day for 30 minutes. That should help her lose weight.

I would try to keep her the weight she is for the rest of her life. Obesity in pugs exacerbates their breathing problems and puts extra stress on bones and promotes arthritis. Obesity causes many health conditions and shortens the life of dogs. Being lean is a good thing. You just don't want to feel or see hip bones. I prefer Royal Canin. Have a great weekend!

If the majority of your pups diet is a good quality puppy food ( at least 80% ), then you can supplement with the sweet potatoes, vegetables (?), & only a very small amount of pumpkin. Pumpkin has a lot of fiber, so restrict this so as not to cause a loose stool. Also, make sure it is canned, or cooked pumpkin, & not pumpkin pie filling. Take care.

It's difficult to know, because it really depends on the calories. Grain free is not necessarily good for weight management and there is no good reason to feed boiled chicken if you have a formulated diet. There are some products in the pet store that are actually formulated for weight loss and these would be the best ones to feed. I know Hills, Purina and Royal Canin all have good products, but don't know of any other. The best thing to check on the bag is the AAFCO statement, which is just below the guaranteed analysis. This will tell if the food has actually demonstrated what it claims. I've included a link to an article below that explains all of this. Make sure you feed the food according to the bag's instructions and cut out all treats and table scraps. Trust me, you are not starving them, despite how bad they may make you feel. Boiled veggies such as carrots, potato, broccoli etc are all fine to give as treats, but they should not make up the majority of Shiro's diet. You should make sure he is on a balanced diet of puppy food to ensure he grows up strong and healthy. However, if he likes snacking on some potato or carrot, that should be fine to give him - just make sure it is plain boiled and doesn't have any added spices or sauces on it which may cause an upset stomach.
