Can my dog eat boiled potatoes daily? What other veggies are safe?

Potatoes are safe for dogs to eat, as long as they are cooked and given in small pieces so that dogs do not choke on them. Potatoes are high in carbs, but provide vitamins including vitamins A and C, as well as iron. Pieces of cooked potato can be given as a small snack, but should not constitute a large portion of your pet's diet. I hope this is helpful!

If the majority of your pups diet is a good quality puppy food ( at least 80% ), then you can supplement with the sweet potatoes, vegetables (?), & only a very small amount of pumpkin. Pumpkin has a lot of fiber, so restrict this so as not to cause a loose stool. Also, make sure it is canned, or cooked pumpkin, & not pumpkin pie filling. Take care.

Carrots, squash, green beans and peas are all good choices, and a lot of dogs actually like them. Broccoli, cauliflower, bell peppers are safe but generally not as "dog approved." Never feed onions, garlic, or chives, as these will cause red blood cell damage that will lead to life threatening anemia when ingested in large enough quantities. Hello, Pilot should be fine as long as the potato wasn't moldy. Some molds may cause disorientation, seizures, and heart arrhythmias but this is most commonly seen in large animals. The potato may also cause some GI signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, or vomiting. If you note any of the above then have him evaluated by a veterinarian immediately. Otherwise, you can continue to monitor him at home and keep any other potatoes away from him. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Raw sweet potato should not be toxic to dogs. However, it is likely not easily digestible, and so may cause diarrhea. Another concern I would have is whether Kira ate a large chunk of the potato which may cause an obstruction in her stomach or intestines. For now, I would continue to monitor her. You can try offering her small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and white rice. This may help alleviate any GI upset. If she starts vomiting or becomes disinterested in food, or if her diarrhea does not improve within 1-2 days, I would get her to the vet. They can assess for a possible obstruction through physical exam and x-rays, and at minimum provide supportive medications to help get her feeling better quickly. People food and veggies are fine as a treat in moderation, however Nala Jai should be on a balanced puppy diet at this point in time to help her grow and stay healthy. Several brands are available that are great such as Science Diet, Purina, Eukanuba, etc, and many offer puppy formulations specific to your dog's breed, age, and size. Fresh veggies such as a piece of carrot, broccoli or some lean chicken are all great as treats, but should be used in moderation and not as the primary diet.
