Will oral metronidazole cure my dog's anal gland infection?

I don't think you should be worried at this point. There is a good chance it will clear up with the antibiotics and anti-inflammatory. Sometimes the infection can be harder to treat and the gland may need to be infused with an antibiotic. Give the medications as directed and monitor for improvement. Your vet can recheck her in 7-10 days to see if the infection is resolving.

Place an e-collar (cone) on Smugde to prevent any licking. Have her rechecked by your veterinarian. The anal glands should be expressed and flushed. Afterwards, medication can be instilled directly into the glands. Before all this, consider obtaining a sample to submit for culture and sensitivity panels. This may identify the responsible organism as well as the best antibiotic to use in treatment.

Hello. Most anal gland infections heal up quite nicely with medications & keeping the area clean. Unless there is a special circumstance involving Tia's glands, such as the area is just not healing, additional flushing & treatment is usually not necessary. Yes you should take him back, anal gland infections often take several weeks to resolve and require 3-4 weeks course of antibiotics, often the antibiotic will need to be changed, i have found over time that Clindamycin is the most effective antibiotic for anal gland infection.

Oh no, it's not good that Bella ate the metronidazole tablet! There is a wide range of doses for metronidazole for dogs depending on the condition being treated, and at her weight and the dose she ate, the tablet is within the range of doses. It's on the higher end, but still within the dose range. That being said, you could see some side effects from eating this medication, such as GI upset. Excessive salivation, gagging, nausea, vomiting, and decreased appetite are the most common side effects seen. If you see any of those signs, withhold food for 8-12 hours, then feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. Rarely you can see neurological disorders from an accidental overdose, but she likely may not show these signs due to her not overdosing. It's just something I will mention you should be aware of, and if you see anything concerning or she won't stop vomiting, won't eat the bland diet, and/or becomes very lethargic, take her into a vet right away. Metronidazole would not be the first choice antibiotic for urinary tract issues and would generally be used after a culture and sensitivity test has detected it would be the most effective option. It is occasionally used to treat recurrent infections where resistant bacteria are suspected. There are many more effective options available but remember antibiotics should only be used where a bacterial infection is diagnosed (by urine test) - there are many other causes of urinary tract issues such as stones, crystals and inflammation which do not need and will not respond to antibiotics but where treatment will encourage the development of antibiotic resistance which may make future treatment more difficult

If you want to start with the metronidazole and the dewormer first that is fine. Recheck her temperature in 24 hours. If it is still elevated give the loxicam. The loxicam is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. Good luck!
