Dog anal gland infection with pus, antibiotics not working. What now?

I don't think you should be worried at this point. There is a good chance it will clear up with the antibiotics and anti-inflammatory. Sometimes the infection can be harder to treat and the gland may need to be infused with an antibiotic. Give the medications as directed and monitor for improvement. Your vet can recheck her in 7-10 days to see if the infection is resolving.

Hello. Most anal gland infections heal up quite nicely with medications & keeping the area clean. Unless there is a special circumstance involving Tia's glands, such as the area is just not healing, additional flushing & treatment is usually not necessary. I am sorry to hear that! It may be that the infection is still going on - you may need a longer course of the antibiotic or perhaps a different one. I would recommend having them expressed again to see if there is still debris present. I would also want to double check and make sure there is not a mass present in the area:( You can ask for a biopsy to be done if the lump seems unrelated to the infection. Yes you should take him back, anal gland infections often take several weeks to resolve and require 3-4 weeks course of antibiotics, often the antibiotic will need to be changed, i have found over time that Clindamycin is the most effective antibiotic for anal gland infection.

If Mavrick's anus is still smelling terribly after a week and a half, I would take him back into the vet. It could be that the antibiotics are not working, and a different treatment may need to be tried. I would take him back into the vet tomorrow morning.

Boozo is adorable. I am not sure if it was done or not but were the anal glands actually expressed? If it is an anal gland infection then they should be expressed and potentially flushed out and infused with antibiotics. If this was not done I would also consider getting a stool sample to make sure the Boozo does not have any intestinal parasites or a bacterial overgrowth. I usually send home Simplicef for anal gland fistula but Clavamox at an appropriate dose for Lily’s weight would definitely help, especially if you are not able to bring her to the vet right away. It is important to fully express both the ruptured anal gland and the other anal gland to prevent a second fistula on the other side. Ideally the ruptured anal gland should be flushed with a dilute chlorhexidine solution but a sitz is definitely better than not cleaning out the ruptured gland at all. I usually send home an e-collar to prevent licking, antibiotics, a probiotic to prevent antibiotic associated diarrhea, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory for pain such as Rimadyl, and a topical prescription steroid/antibiotic/antifungal ointment to speed up the healing process.
