Is metronidazole effective for my dog's urinary tract infection?

Typically Metronidazole is good for GI infections and sometimes urinate infections. I typically go with Clindamycin for oral infections and Doxycyline for respiratory infections. However your vet can do a bacterial culture to verify what antibiotic will be effective against Avery's bacterial infection. Best wishes and take care.

Anal sac infections can be tricky sometimes. Metronidazole is a very common and useful medication for most anal sac abscesses and is what I use frequently. My typical approach is antibiotic therapy for 10-14 days and then I recheck them. If the infection is still present then often I recommend flushing the sacs and infusing medication directly into them. Occasionally for tough cases I will culture the fluid and for very refractory cases surgery may be recommended. However, most are resolved by either oral medications or the infusions. If they become a repeat offender and it occurs again then I will usually recommend a hypoallergenic diet trial. Best of luck and I hope Bella improves soon.

At best, you may be giving an unnecessary medication & at worse, you may be treating inappropriately & causing a simple infection to become much worse. Yes, Metronidazole is safe to give pets that are less than 6 months old. In refractory cases, it is often recommended to also treat with a dewormer (i.e. Fenbendazole). Also if your pet is constantly getting Giardia, then I would highly consider doing a bloodwork check to ensure there is no immune system issue that is making your pet more prone to infections. Since parvovirus causes damage to the intestines and therefore wnables intestinal bacteria to enter the blood stream , your puppy needs to be treated with antibiotics that cover a variety of bacteria (gram positive and gram negative). Metronidazole kills those bacteria and also seems to have a positive effect on the immune system, so it is the antibiotic of choice in parvovirus infections. We always weigh up the advantages (treating the infection) vs the disadvantages (side effects) when prescribing medications, so in this case the advantages outweigh the side effects and Metronidazole is indicated. Your puppy should aslo receive fluids and pain medication. You should also try to feed it very small amounts of wet food very often in order to keep its intestines working. It is usually best to hospitalize the puppy for a few days.

The reason to not vaccinate when they are sick is that the immune system is already ramped up when you are sick, so as to not make it worse. This is more of a concern when there is systemic inflammation (whole body response) to the infection vs. an isolated infection in the bladder. A thickened wall of the bladder could very well be from chronic urinary tract infections, however the question would be WHY is she having chronic urinary tract infections. Also, before switching antibiotics (which is OK to try) it is a good idea to get a culture done of the urine to determine which antibiotic is best to use. If this course of antibiotics doesn't work, or if Gracie gets another urinary tract infection within the next year or so, then I would suggest making sure you get a culture of the urine before starting antibiotics (ideal but often not done due to cost of this test), and also I would be looking at her vulva area to determine if there is a physical cause to her getting chronic urinary tract infections. This can happen when animals are obese, or if there is a lot of extra skin or flaps around the vulva and infection is present around the vulvar skin. Sometimes doing surgery of the skin around the vulva can help prevent more urinary tract infections. Best of luck with Gracie!

It is a low dose based on Coby's weight. There can be long term side effects from using it. Do not lower the dose or give it every other day. It has to be given as prescribed in order to work. Best of luck.
