Worried about my senior dog's infected anal sac turning cancerous?

Hello. Most anal gland infections heal up quite nicely with medications & keeping the area clean. Unless there is a special circumstance involving Tia's glands, such as the area is just not healing, additional flushing & treatment is usually not necessary. Place an e-collar (cone) on Smugde to prevent any licking. Have her rechecked by your veterinarian. The anal glands should be expressed and flushed. Afterwards, medication can be instilled directly into the glands. Before all this, consider obtaining a sample to submit for culture and sensitivity panels. This may identify the responsible organism as well as the best antibiotic to use in treatment.

Hello, so sorry that Sydney is having this issue. It can take up to a week. If after that you are not seeing an improvement by then she will need to go back to the vet for a check-up. I am sorry to hear that! It may be that the infection is still going on - you may need a longer course of the antibiotic or perhaps a different one. I would recommend having them expressed again to see if there is still debris present. I would also want to double check and make sure there is not a mass present in the area:( You can ask for a biopsy to be done if the lump seems unrelated to the infection. Lobito is so cute! It sounds like he had an infected anal sac that opened up, and you did exactly the right thing by taking him into the vet. Antibiotics should help clear up the infection, and there is a chance the anal sac can heal on it's own. Without seeing it in person, I can't say for certain, but definitely keep an eye on it and if it doesn't appear to be healing over the next week, have him seen by a vet again as then surgery may be needed to close it completely. Yes. Abscesses are infection and require treatment. Abscesses can become chronic or even turn into something like septicemia. It’s best to get them taken care of quickly. Make an appointment with his veterinarian. You also need to prevent licking and he should wear an Elizabethan collar at all times. Poor Cassie, it's likely that she's feeling unwell as these anal gland infections can be pretty painful and also cause a fever. Although Enrofloxacin is a powerful antibiotic, she may benefit from pain relief and anti inflammatory medicine to help her recovery. Also, if its not been done already, emptying and flushing the infected gland will resolve the infection much faster than medicine alone will. There are some side effects to antibiotics, she may be experiencing those. I strongly recommend returning her to your vet as soon as you can for them to determine what extra treatment she may need. As always, do not give any human medicines unless under direct guidance from your vet.
