My 1-month-old puppy has cold-like symptoms. What should I do?

Hello, I'm sorry Shelly isn't feeling well. When we talk about a "cold" in people, typically that implies a viral upper respiratory infection. There is no specific treatment for a viral respiratory infection other than nursing care. However, Shelly's symptoms of clearing her throat with the discharge from her eyes could be something other than a viral respiratory infection - dogs don't get "colds" very often like people do, and I worry about the possibility of something more serious such as pneumonia, a tooth root abscess, or a heart condition, all of which could also cause either upper or lower respiratory congestion. If this has been going on more than a day or two, I recommend having Shelly seen by a vet. Your vet will do an exam, and will likely recommend chest x-rays if they have any concerns with the sound of her lungs or heart. They will then be able to offer specific therapies based on what is causing these symptoms. I hope this helps!

From the pictures, it looks like there is nasal discharge, but I can't tell if it is clear or yellow/white. Many times a cold or upper respiratory tract infection is viral and just needs to run its coarse. You can support him by using a humidifier or being in a bathroom with a steamy shower for 10-15 minutes 2-3 times per day. This will help break up the mucous. If the discharge has a yellow or green color, this may indicate a bacterial infection and he would need antibiotics to get over it, so you you should see the vet. There are other potential causes for the symptoms you have mentioned, including distemper virus and possibly others based on your location in India. If Shadow does not seem interested in food, won't drink water, or is lethargic, he should see a vet as soon as possible. I am sorry that Shadow's mom died. At around 4 weeks old, the mom starts to wean the puppies off. If he has not already been eating puppy food, I would recommend getting wet puppy food that you can mix with puppy milk replacer for the next week. If he eats it well, you can transition him to dry puppy food with water or milk added the next week, and then after that he should be ok on just dry puppy food. During this whole time always keep a bowl of fresh clean water available.

This sounds like she has a mild cold or upper respiratory infection. Generally these are viral colds and will run their course over a week or so. Just like with us no antibiotics are needed unless she develops a secondary bacterial infection. If the discharge becomes green and her condition worsens then please bring her right in for treatment. Poor guy. Upper respiratory infections in dogs are usually caused by a bacterial infection. Other possible causes are a fungal infection, or allergies. It's best to take him to the vet to get examined and medications to treat this. If he does have an upper respiratory infection then he will be prescribed oral antibiotics to take care of it. Signs of a cold in dogs are sneezing, nasal discharge (that is clear) and sometimes coughing. This is suspicious of kennel cough, which is an infection of the upper respiratory system. Kennel cough is most suspicious if Lexie has been in contact with other dogs in the past month or so. If Lexie has not had contact with other dogs, then the cough is likely due to something else. They can develop a cough and runny nose with conditions like distemper, allergies, heart worm, heart disease and lung worm. For this reason, it's best to have Lexie checked out by a veterinarian. They will be able to determine the cause of this and prescribe the appropriate treatment. It's definitely doesn't appear to be an emergency though, so you are safe to wait a day or two to see if it gets better (can happen with some viral diseases).
