Why does my older dog suddenly jump or move strangely? Vet needed?

That is quite strange behavior! Does he act like something is getting his behind? tucking his tail and running away from something. If so, I would have his anal glands checked by your vet. If not, then you may just want to have a thorough exam done to ensure nothing else is hurting or causing him to be so anxious. Your vet will also be able to check his eyes and ears to ensure nothing is throwing his senses off. If all is normal, your vet may recommend an anti-anxiety medicine to help calm him. If this happens mostly at night your vet may recommend only to give it at night. You could also try Benadryl before bedtime but unfortunately, this isn't always strong enough. Hi. It would definitely be helpful to have a little more information about her age and breed and her location. But I will help as much as possible with the information we have. She is showing signs of being uncomfortable. This can be due to pain or inflammation somewhere. A lot of times with the signs that you are describing, I find pets will have an anal gland problem. This is where their anal glands, which are their scent glands, become full and irritated and cause the pets to become uncomfortable if they can't get them to express. The other common finding in these situations is pain somewhere. The only way to get down to the bottom of it is to schedule an examination with your veterinarian. They will then be able to help guide what could be causing this problem for her. I also recommend that they check her anal glands. Have him seen by your veterinarian. The most common, and easiest to treat, cause is full or impacted anal glands. Normally, the anal glands are emptied during the act of defecation. In some dogs, this doesn't happen and the glands fill up, become impacted and could abscess. This would result in the symptoms described. Your veterinarian can Express the glands manually, flush them and instill medication if necessary. Antibiotics and pain medications are also sometimes dispensed. If Scooby is licking back there, place an e-collar (cone) on him until he sees the doctor.

I recommend bringing him to your vet ASAP to have his anal glands expressed. Full anal gland can be extremely uncomfortable or even painful for dogs and can even lead to perianal fistula (ruptured anal glands) if not expressed in a timely fashion. Many vets hospitals will do anal gland expressions without charging an office visit/exam fee. However if the anal glands are not full, a full exam by your veterinarian to determine if there is any obvious lesion in either Gunner’s perianal region or musculoskeletal pain would be helpful.

It sounds like Kamber may have full anal glands. This is often how they behave if that is the case. If they are full and go untreated an infection can occur. In the meantime you can feed her a couple tablespoons of canned pumpkin per day as this may help. Used pure pumpkin and not the pie filling. If this has just started suddenly it could be a sign of anal gland issues like impaction or infection. Some groomers can express anal glands and tell you if they feel normal. Or you can have your veterinarian do an exam.
