Why is my puppy whimpering and hopping? Could it be anal glands?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 5 months and 12 days old | 35 lbs

Hi I have a 5 month old pit puppy. Tonight out of no where she started whimpering and than moving her head from side to side and looking at something it seems like. And she keeps trying to kind of hop like a frog in a way. My other dog max he's 3 he's done the same thing. It goes away after he poops or has finally passed the hair that's caught in there. What do I do.

It sounds like Kamber may have full anal glands. This is often how they behave if that is the case. Here is a link to this problem in dogs:

I suggest you get her to your vet to have the glands checked. If they are full and go untreated an infection can occur. In the meantime you can feed her a couple tablespoons of canned pumpkin per day as this may help. Used pure pumpkin and not the pie filling.

Hope this helps. Best wishes!
