My older dog is shaking. Is it arthritis or another health issue?

So your dog has arthritis in the right hip and a subluxation in the left hip. He may be shaking due to pain from these problems, and he may need pain medications. Do NOT give him any human pain medications. Many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Take him into the vet to get pain medications. Best of luck.

Shaking in the morning does sound like arthritis, and this is likely the cause, however it is a good idea to get him checked out by a vet to see if there are any other problems. Treatment for arthritis is multifocal. Glucosamine can help, just make sure you get the one that is Glucosamine HCl (not Glucosamine Sulphate used for humans, they will pee this out unchanged). You can also talk to your vet about pentosan injections, as well as a change in diet. Hill's has a food called "J/D" that is good for joints and has supplements built in. Keeping the muscle mass up without excessive stress on the joints is very helpful, and swimming is great for this. Also, if Paulie is overweight, a diet will be the most helpful treatment. Shaking often indicates pain and can be seen with arthritis as they age. This could also indicate a problem with the nervous system and one major cause of this in senior dogs is a condition known as cognitive dysfunction. Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Bentley's care today! Lameness and/or possible leg pain and shaking can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Have Scooter evaluated by your veterinarian to further assess this possibility. If he does have arthritis, there are supplements and medications that can help with this tremendously. Poor Jackson! He could be shaking from pain, which would also cause him to be lethargic. At his age, it could be that he is suffering from arthritis. I would rest him tonight, and then have Jackson seen by a vet first thing tomorrow if he's still shaking and acting lethargic. The vet can diagnose what is causing his symptoms, and can treat him for them.

Shaking can be a sign of anxiety (as with thunderstorms) or could indicate pain and discomfort. I would recommend taking Molly in to be examined by your veterinarian. She likely has some degree of arthritis and this could be causing her discomfort. She may need to be started on a joint supplement and an anti inflammatory drug to help with pain. I hope this helps.
