My 10-year-old dog is shaking. What's wrong and what should I do?

Poor guy. He certainly sounds like he may either be in pain or has some underyling neurological disorder going on here. Your vet should know where to start looking once a complete physical examination is done, because much more information can be gathered here. They will certainly want to start with some baseline bloodwork and possibly some x-rays if he seems to have any musculoskeletal issues as well. Some possible causes for these symptoms would be an underlying neurological disorder (i.e. IVDD), Addison's disease (disease of the adrenal gland), a toxin ingestion, or just pain from something internal. This behavior could be due to older age and brain senile problems but also shivering and lethargy could be caused by arthritic pain. A visit at your local vets is recommended as Carly will probably benefit from medications to treat chronic pain or from medications that help for dementia.

It can be from muscle or joint pain or perhaps she is experiencing anxiety. Thunderstorms and fireworks are big causes for anxiety this time of year. Shaking can be a sign of anxiety (as with thunderstorms) or could indicate pain and discomfort. I would recommend taking Molly in to be examined by your veterinarian. She likely has some degree of arthritis and this could be causing her discomfort. She may need to be started on a joint supplement and an anti inflammatory drug to help with pain. I hope this helps. If she is unvaccinated for distemper, I would potentially consider this as a possibility but in older animals, distemper is not commonly seen. She may be uncomfortable from something (painful) or an infection / systemic disease. If adjusting the temperature to keep her warm does not help, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hello. At 10 years of age, I would not rule out arthritis in Sookie. But there could be other things going on. A good geriatric blood panel will give a great overview of her health, & then I would try her on a trial of a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication to see how she responds. X rays of her neck & back can be very revealing, too. Hopefully, Sookie will be feeling better soon. Take care.

There could be a couple of reasons why Elliot is shaking constantly. These things include pain, being cold, injury, fever, nausea, or a serious illness. I'm not sure if she is showing any other signs such as vomiting, diarrhea, limping, or lethargy. If she is only shaking but is otherwise behaving normally, eating normally, drinking normally, and moving normally, it's fine to wait until Monday to have her seen a vet for this problem. Keep her quiet and warm, and rest her as much as possible. Should she start showing other signs such as the ones I mentioned above or any other concerning ones, then I would take her into a vet right away for evaluation and treatment. I hope this helps!
