My dog is shaking on and off and lethargic. When to see a vet?

Your poor pup sounds ill! Without seeing him in person, I can't say what is causing his symptoms, but it could be due to a systemic infection or injury to name a few things. The best thing to do for him is to take him into a vet as soon as possible. I hope this helps!

If this is unusual behavior for your dog I would be concerned that there's something wrong. Shaking and lethargy can be indicative of pain, anxiety or that the pet just isn't feeling well. Unfortunately, lethargy and shaking can be caused by a number of conditions including: toxin ingestion, severe anemia, sepsis (infection in the bloodstream), an electrolyte imbalance, or a neurological condition just to name a few. If Rocky is acating abnormal in this way and doesn't seem to be snapping out of it for more than 30 mins or so, then its best to take him to your local ER vet for further evaluation. Please also check his gum color to ensure they are still nice and pink. Pale gums are cause for an immediate vet visit wtihout waiting for the pet to improve. Hmm. That is odd. With no other symptoms besides the shaking, it is hard to say for sure. Shaking can be a sign of pain, neurological or an acid/base imbalance. I would continue monitor him for the next 12 hrs to see if this behavior continues. If it does then the next best step is to get some baseline bloodwork to look for underlying issues. You can also feel around to see if Snickers is painful in any particular area. That can help the vet focus on that one area to look for underlying causes. At this age most dogs also have arthritis, so it is a good idea to get Snickers on a daily joint supplement regardless. I'm sorry to hear that Charlie isn't feeling well. His behavior certainly doesn't normal for him. I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian. It is not uncommon for small breed dogs to experience back or neck pain. The pain can be intense. Sign in the dog are usually a reluctance to jump on furniture, refusal to do stairs, shaking and hesitant to move. In worst case scenarios, some dogs was will experience neurologic problems such as weakness or paralysis of the limbs. Charlie will need to see his veterinarian to know if this is what is causing his symptoms verses something else. In the meantime, keep him quiet and encourage him to eat and drink. Unfortunately, these are very vague symptoms that could be caused by almost any kind of medical problem - shaking, acting lethargic, and not eating are generally signs of pain or discomfort, but beyond that he would need an exam and some diagnostic testing to determine what's wrong. I would recommend taking him to the vet today to be seen. He/she can do blood work, x-rays, or other testing if needed to help diagnose the problem.

Shaking can be a sign of pain, fever, nausea or dehydration. If you haven’t had your dog examined by a vet since he ran away I think you should to make sure he isn’t painful or dehydrated. They can also take his temperature to make sure he doesn’t have a fever.
