Why is my dog stiff, not moving, and in pain? What's wrong with him?

Pet's info: Dog | Cavalier King Charles Spaniel | Male | neutered | 8 years and 6 months old

Hi my dog recently has had a loss in appetite. He rarely moves which is unusual. When I try and bribe him to move with his favor treat or anything he dosnt. He is a bit stiff when he lies down and gets comfortable he finds it hard to get up. I cannot get him to a vets for another 3 days. He also squeals and whines sometimes if one of my kids are rough with him , this usually never happened. What’s wrong could he possibly be dying??

I'm concerned that Charlie is very unwell, and I highly recommend taking him in to a vet immediately, or getting a housecall vet to your home. Do not let your children be rough with him, as it may worsen his condition, and also is not safe for the children, as Charlie may feel forced to defend himself and accidentally injure them. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels can be prone to heart disease and also a condition called syringomyelia that can lead to neurological symptoms. He may also be dealing with infectious disease or trauma leading to his symptoms, but it is not possible to tell without having him examined by a vet, so I recommend having him seen by one right away. I'm sorry to hear that Charlie isn't feeling well. His behavior certainly doesn't normal for him. I would recommend that he sees his veterinarian. It is not uncommon for small breed dogs to experience back or neck pain. The pain can be intense. Sign in the dog are usually a reluctance to jump on furniture, refusal to do stairs, shaking and hesitant to move. In worst case scenarios, some dogs was will experience neurologic problems such as weakness or paralysis of the limbs. Charlie will need to see his veterinarian to know if this is what is causing his symptoms verses something else. In the meantime, keep him quiet and encourage him to eat and drink. My dog cries and bites when picked up. What's causing his sudden pain?

It's hard to know where the problem is exactly and what is causing it, but Charlie is in pain, no doubt about it. i would recommend taking him to the vet ASAP, it could be a slipped disk in the spine, a trauma or an internal condition and as the pain sounds severe it is in my opinion quite urgent.

My dog is sick, in pain, slow, and won't move or drink. Help!

The hiccups were probably because Charlie was retching before he vomited. I'm concerned about him not moving much, and of he yelps he's probably in pain. I recommend taking him to the vet either tonight or first thing tomorrow to be examined. There are many possible illnesses that could present this way. Do not give human pain medicines as they're often toxic to dogs.

It could be Charlie has some pain in his neck or back. Please do not give him any human pain medication. Many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. Rest him tonight and take him into the vet in the morning to get this diagnosed and treated. Best of luck.

Why is my old dog wobbly, shaking, and having head tremors?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Charlie. He could have many things going on due to his age. Possibilities include toxin exposure, infection, heart problems, neurologic problems, endocrine/hormone problems, kidney/liver/gallbladder disease, cancer, etc. I would advise taking Charlie to your veterinarian right away to get him assessed. Your vet can gather a history, perform an exam and then advise a diagnostic/treatment plan based on their findings. Possible tests include fecal/blood/urine tests, x-rays/ultrasound. Once a diagnosis is made a treatment plan can be implemented. Good luck with Charlie

My dog suddenly can't use his hind legs and won't eat. What's wrong?

Charlie needs to see the veterinarian today. Losing the usage of the hind legs is serious and can indicate many conditions like compression of the spinal cord, cancer or a blood clot. This can effect the ability to voluntarily urinate long term and needs to be addressed asap otherwise there can be permenant damage. The damage can occur in as little as 24 hours. Cavaliers are prone to some heritable diseases such as syringomelia and heart disease. Syringomelia is a condition that causes pain and scratching in the neck area, which could be aggravated by turning her on her back. Of course, her problem could have other causes, but the signs are to general to be able to pin point a cause. If she does not improve by tomorrow , or if she deteriorates you need to take her to a veterinarian for an exam.
