My old dog's wart scab won't heal. Should I be worried?

If another scab forms then I would make sure to not her scratch it off. You can try to keep her from it by using dog "shorts" you may find online to try to cover that area. Hopefully, this continues to heal without problems. If it becomes a recurrent issue or it develops a discharge with a foul odor concerning for an infection, have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. I would recommend just leaving this alone and making sure he is not able to lick this area. It does not appear infected to me based on the photo, however if you are noticing redness or swelling around the wound or if there is discharge you should see a veterinarian. I would definitely recommend checking in with your veterinarian when they are open to make sure there is nothing else they would recommend for Reese.

Anytime there is an injury to the skin, a scab should form and should stay in place until the skin underneath is completely healed. If the area of Tula's scab was deep, it can take a while for the skin underneath to completely heal enough for the scab to fall off. If the area around the scab is red or oozing or the scabbed area is enlarging, then I would recommend having Tula examined by your veterinarian. Poor Mushu! Given that a scab has formed over this sore, it is healing and I would keep monitor it for now. Once the skin underneath is fully healed, the scab will fall off. I'd leave the scab alone and not rub at it. If you remove the scab, you will be disturbing the healing process and it will take longer to heal. Should the scab still be there in a few weeks, then I would be concerned and have Mushu seen by a vet.

If this is dry and dark in color, this indicates it is likely healing. This spot will likely flake off once completely healed. If it really is just a scab, then I would leave it alone, since pulling it off will hurt and may cause bleeding. Scabs are there to protect the new tissue that is growing underneath. Scabs can often be confused by small moles, ticks, small papillomas or warts, or even a tumor. When Sven is calm and sitting near you, look and see if it looks like a scab (usually flat) or something else. If it is something else, then you should have it checked out by a vet.

Ouch! That does look pretty irritated, so if it doesn't scab over or continues to look weepy, it's a good idea to have your vet take that look on Wednesday as it may need some anitbiotics. What you're doing at home currently is perfect! I'd continue to use the E-collar to prevent pawing at it, and keep the area clean and dry. You can use a clean compress to gently keep it clean so as to not cause more irritation by rubbing at it or accidentally bumping the scab as excessive cleaning may actually be slowing down the healing process. It should be fine to wait until Wednesday to have it looked at unless it massively swells up, becomes painful to the touch, or starts to ooze any cloudy or green discolored debris (all signs of infection).
