Why is my old pug suddenly unresponsive and urinating unaware?

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear that you're having these issues with Honey. Scooting his rear end on the rug is often a sign of impacted anal glands, or intestinal parasites. Brown gunk and a foul smell to the ears usually indicates a yeast or bacterial ear infection. Increased urination and accidents in the house can be caused by diabetes, Cushing's disease, chronic kidney disease, or a bladder issues such as stones or a UTI. All of these problems will require treatment by a veterinarian, so I would recommend taking Honey in for an exam. He/she can do some diagnostic testing if needed to help determine what all is going on with him and get him started on appropriate treatment depending on what is found.

While these are vague clinical signs, these may be due to some sort of underlying disease of either the gastrointestinal tract, liver or kidney disease, and/or a possible neoplastic or cancerous process. Since he has had a decreased appetite long enough to lose weight, I recommend having him evaluated by your veterinarian at their next available appointment. Your vet can perform bloodwork to look for any evidence of systemic illness that may be contributing to his clinical signs. His clinical signs are unlikely due to behavioral changes alone. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Snickers. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian again. The hindlimb problems should not be related to his recent anal gland expression. The condition is worrisome though. He may be experiencing advancing joint disease that is leaving him to be very weak in the back legs. The collapsing and splaying is likely painful for him. He also could be experiencing a neurological condition from a bulging or ruptured disc in his back. This can be a very serious situation as the weakness has the potential to become paralysis. For this reason, he needs to be seen as soon as possible. Keep him quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

She could be acting like that from perhaps severe dehydration and hypovolemia (lack of volume in her circulatory system) from so much diarrhea and recent history of anorexia and not drinking water. She could have also being exposed to some toxin that is affecting both her gastrointestinal and neurologic systems. I highly recommend you take her to a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible. Good luck!

Poor guy. It sounds like Noddy has a serious issue affecting his neurological system or his musculoskeletal system. He needs to be seen right away by your nearest veterinarian for medications to help stabilize his condition. There unfortunately isn't anything you can give him at home for this type of condition, so it is best to take him in right away for bloodwork and potential x-rays to check for any signs of arthritis or degenerative joint disease that may explain his symptoms and offer a reasonable treatment plan to help him.

Hello! I'm sorry to hear about your puppy's strange behavior. I am always suspicious of a strange endocrine disorder called Addison's disease whenever I hear of vague, difficult to pinpoint clinical signs in poodles and poodle mixes. Addison's disease, or Hypoadrenocorticism, is an endocrine disorder where the body is unable to balance its own steroid hormones and/or electrolyte levels. It can be difficult to diagnose, often requiring multiple blood tests. It's also one of the most rewarding problems to treat though; the medications work very well and dogs live excellent, high quality lives when it is well managed. Sometimes, strange staring behavior can be a sign of a partial seizure. Seizure activity can make pets nauseous afterwards in the "post-ictal" (after seizure) phase. I would recommend trying to get videos of the gazing behavior, including ones where you attempt to distract by calling their name and offering treats, to see if they break concentration during the stare. It sounds like Ingmar could have a serious health issue related to heart disease, seizures, or toxin exposure. I strongly recommend you have him examined by a veterinarian right away as some of these issues can be life threatening. Your veterinarian can assess Ingmar for a heart murmur and take X-rays to determine if emergency heart medication is needed. If seizures are suspected, then medication may be needed to prevent them in the future. Blood work should also be done to ensure no organ issues are present.
