My poodle mix is staring blankly, not moving, and throwing up. Why?

Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. You could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. Good luck and have a great day!

Hi there. Sorry Gracie isn't feeling well Unfortunately many things can present like this in pets. With your pet's age and status of unspayed, I would actually worry most about a few things: pyometra (uterine infection), kidney disease, liver disease, and diabetes. I would recommend having her seen as soon as you can due to her advanced age. Likely your vet will recommend blood work to make sure everything is functioning normally. Based on the findings there, they can come up with an appropriate treatment plan. I hope this helps and that she feels much better soon.

Chronic vomiting, has multiple causes but may cause an electrolyte imbalance which could account for the symptoms you are seeing. If he is drinking more water than usual, he should be seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork to rule out kidney disease, diabetes or other GI issues. When a pet is vomiting, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If he won't eat, serve the food warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not or if the appetite does not return, then you will need to see your veterinarian.

Hi, thanks for usnig Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry your dog is sick! It would be helpful to know your dogs age and if she is spayed. Also if she is having trouble urinating or defecating? Anytime an animal is not breathing normally it is an emergency. Sometimes the breathing can look abnormal when they are in pain or have a fever but there are more serious causes for trouble breathing that are life threatening: heart failure, pneumonia, pleural effusion, cancer. The abnormal breathing alone is a reason to take her to an emergency room now. If you mean she is straining to urinate and is NOT passing urine, that is also a life threatening problem and see should be taken to an open emergency room. Causes of being unable or urinate are most commonly from a bladder stone stuck in the urethra or a bladder tumor. When dogs strain to pee they can vomit and pant due to pain If she is straining to poop, then that likely means she has diarrhea and feels the urge to go but doesn't have any stool to pass. Since she is also vomiting she could have an upset stomach from: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infection, ate something gross, food change, new treat or table food, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion. If she is straining to poop then that can wait for your vet to open. Trouble breathing and urinating shouldn't wait. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

Yes, any pet that has persistent signs especially vomiting and diarrhea should be evaluated immediately. Once dehydration and electrolyte imbalance develop, they will just continue to get weaker and weaker unless treated. Reasons for vomiting/diarrhea are many and range from intestinal problems or problems with other organs in the body causing the signs. Intestinal worms, dietary indiscretion (eating things she is not supposed to eat), dietary intolerance/sensitivity, a foreign body (especially in younger dogs), infection, inflammation, toxins, pancreatitis, kidney/liver problems, etc. Your vet can do a physical exam and some tests which could include a fecal exam, blood work, x-rays, ultrasound, etc. to try to determine what is causing the problem. Once a diagnosis is made they will advise a treatment plan to address the issue. Your vet can also address the itching of her muzzle and whining which may or may not be related. I hope this is just temporary and it resolves quickly for you and Moka.

I am sorry L is not feeling well. I would highly recommend taking her to a vet as soon as possible. In such a young dog it is important to have them looked at as soon as they start acting sick. IT is possible L has a parasites, gastric upset, or infection which is causing the vomiting and stomach noise. I would recommend a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice in very small frequent portions. I would monitor her stool closely, you can look for parasites and diarrhea. I do really think L should see a vet due to multiple issues. Hope she feels better soon,

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It sounds like Jinx may have a serious neurologic condition that is causing him to act so strangely. I recommend having him seen by your veterinarian at their next available appointment. I would be worried that he had a seizure or a stroke. Your vet can perform a physical and neurologic exam to see if they can localize the problem. They may recommend bloodwork to check for underlying disease that may have predisposed Jinx to have a neurologic episode. I hope this is helpful!
