My dog had severe seizures. Was putting him to sleep the right choice?

I am so sorry that happened. A seizure that lasts more than an hour can cause significant brain damage. If they could not get the seizures under control and they kept getting worse I do believe you did the right thing. We have the ability to relieve pets of their pain and suffering and we have the ability to help them pass without having to get to the worst parts of disease. You loved Lulu very much and this was something you can do for her so she doesn't suffer. I am so sorry and I wish you healing in your time of pain. It is not likely. I think you made the correct decision to have him humanely euthanized. I know it was a difficult decision for you to make and I'm very sorry you had to make it. I really believe you did what was best for him.

It is always a tough decision to say goodbye to a beloved pet but from your description, you made the right choice for him. His quality of life was poor, and you prevented him from suffering. I hope this helps!

Hello. I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved pet. He, unfortunately, suffered a severe cardio-pulmonary event, either from the presence of heartworms, cancer, or severe cardiomyopathy. He was probably sicker than you realized, & also sicker longer than just the past 6 weeks. We all try to do the best we can for ourselves & our pets & sometimes we just run out of time to do anything. I know you feel bad, but you have to be honest with yourself & know that even if you had the money, he may have been too sick to do much for him. First off, I'm so sorry you had to say goodbye to Murphy. Please accept my condolences for your loss. You are right that vestibular disease isn't progressive, and it sounds like to me his symptoms were getting worse over time. To be honest, I think you did the right thing for him. It sounds like he had a pretty poor quality of life, and letting him go peacefully was a very kind thing to do, even though it was hard. Do not upset yourself thinking you put him to sleep wrongly, I think you made the right decision. Be kind to yourself.

It isn't normal for older dogs to start having seizures and I agree the prognosis was probably not good. Just know that he is no longer suffering and you gave him a wonderful long life. Please don't beat yourself up over this! Based on what you are saying, Beaux's quality of life was poor, and you made the right choice. You put his interests ahead of yours, and that was a great gift to give him. You let him go without any further suffering, which is a very hard thing to do.
