Why is my old dog not eating, congested, drooling, and acting strange?

Hello, and thank you for your question. I'm sorry to hear that Toby has been unwell. It sounds like he may have a cold (i.e. kennel cough). Other possibilities include pneumonia, or heart issues. I would recommend taking Toby to the vet if his coughing and lethargy doesn't improve within the next 24 hours. In the meantime, keep up his food and water intake, and allow him plenty of opportunities to rest. If it is kennel cough, you'll want to keep him away from other dogs anyway as it is contagious. Toby is experiencing very general symptoms of disease, these symptoms could fit almost any internal condition, maybe he is suffering from nausea due to a gastrointestinal disease and maybe he is in pain, from the symptoms described it's very hard to know. i would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible in order to get him checked, if he doesn't show any other obvious symptoms during the examination, a blood test and possibly an ultrasound will be needed in order to try and find out what is wrong with Toby.

It sounds like there are a couple of things going on with Scout at the moment. The drooling and blood from his mouth suggests a dental problem, which can be common in older dogs. It would also cause him to not eat as much, and he would eat the softened food because it won't hurt his teeth as much. As for the thick mucus from his eyes, that can be a sign of an eye infection. Finally the panting can be a sign of being hot or something more serious such as heart disease. It's very concerning to me that you think there is blood in his drool and his eating has decreased. You need to take him into the vet first thing in the morning, this is not something that can be treated at home or should be left untreated. The vet can treat his myriad of problems. Poor Ron! The congestion and the vomiting could be related or it could be two separate problems. It sounds like he likely has a respiratory infection. I would see your vet for an exam and possible antibiotics. Your vet will be able to do X-rays if needed to ensure he hasn't developed pneumonia as well. The vomiting could be from swallowing a lot of mucus or it could be something's separate like a bscterial infection, viral infection, eating something he shouldn't, etc. Your vet will be able to help determine this as well eith the exam. Poor Toby! It sounds like he's quite painful. If he can't stand, there are a number of things that could have happened to him. He could have been hit by a car, or run into something and hurt his back. He could also have a slipped disc in his back. He needs to be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. He or she should be able to isolate where the pain is coming from and provide the appropriate treatment.

Hello there and thank you for your post! With the symptoms you are describing that Jasper has I would suspect severe dental disease with the drooling and dark brown reddish spots. This could indicate that he has severe dental disease and may explain why he has infrequent eating times. I would also be concerned about a respiratory infection if he is coughing and given his age I would have to put a cancerous cause on my list of possibilities. It could be Tobi has a severe GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or pancreatitis. I'm concerned about his symptoms, and think he needs to see a vet now. Please take him into one immediately.
