Dog coughing white slime, eye discharge, and tired. What should I do?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Toby. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian. His symptoms can be related to an upper respiratory tract infection. He may need to be started on antibiotics. A runny nose in dog tends to be a more serious sign than it is in humans. In the meantime, keep him quiet to allow his body to rest. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Tobi. The coughing/gagging sound you described can be a sign of a respiratory tract infection. Infected dogs can also cough up a white foamy material. Poor guy. If the coughing is lasting more than 12-24 hrs, then there is a good chance Toby has a bit of an upper respiratory infection (i.e. Kennel cough). I would highly recommend taking him in to your local vet to get treatment, which usually consists of a short course of antibiotics to clear things up. Pet vaccinated with the Bordetella vaccine once every 6-12 months are protected up to 87% from contracting URI's, so this would be best to do once Tobby is feeling better. : ) I hope that your fur baby feels better soon! Yes I would recommend you take Toby into your vet for an exam to make sure he doesn't have a upper respiratory infection and rule out other health issues that could be causing his symptoms. Oh that's not good that Toby isn't eating or acting like himself. He could be nauseous, eating something rotten, or could have dental problems causing the drooling and anorexia among other causes. The congestion could be caused by a respiratory disease, cardiac disease, or even cancer if it's spread to his lungs. I would monitor him tonight. Should he still not be eating in the morning, and is still drooling and sounding congested, I would have him seen by a vet for a health check.

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

Alfie is displaying classic signs of an upper respiratory infection (aka kennel cough). These can often be due to a viral infection, so that is likely why the vet has prescribed the benadryl; they are treating conservatively. The benadryl will help make Alfie feel better, but will also make him tired. However, it appears the infection has gotten worse and I would be prescribing antibiotics at this time. They do tend to feel crummy (much like we do when we have a cold), but rest assured, this is not an emergency and no need to rush off to the emergency vet. You can see your vet at a regular appointment time in the next day or two and they will advise on additional medication. I hope that helps and Alfie feels better soon.
