My old dog is very sick with bloody discharge. Can I use OTC meds?

She likely has a urinary tract infection or possibly bladder stones. If you can't get her in any sooner than Monday and can't call them to ask for advice or to move up the appointment and she still seems otherwise okay, get her seen Monday. If she does start feeling sick or has trouble urinating, take her to an emergency clinic, just understand that at any vet right now the wait may be long unless she is an emergency and in very bad shape. I don't know of any products you can buy over the counter that will help, and using OTC products could actually mask symptoms that could help lead to a faster diagnosis when she does get to her appointment.

I would recommend to take Nina into the vets today if possible. She may have a urinary tract infection, bladder stones or even something very serious like a urethral blockage (which can be fatal). The doctor will palpate her abdomen and get a urine sample to analyze. I'm not sure that the eyes are related to the urine issues, they could just be a symptom that she is sick or could be an issue all of their own. Poor Snic! Frequent urination with blood at the end of the urine stream could be caused by a few different things - even if she doesn't act painful, this is definitely not normal. The most common causes of these symptoms in an older female dog like Snic would include a bacterial UTI, bladder stones, or even a bladder tumor of some kind. I would recommend taking Snic to the vet for an exam as soon as you are able to - he/she can do a urinalysis and may also recommend x-rays or ultrasound of her bladder to help diagnose the problem and get her started on appropriate treatment.

I would be worried this is a UTI, and no you cannot purchase medication without seeing a vet. Coco needs antibiotics if she has one, and that is available by prescription only from a vet. I would not monitor her for a day, UTIs are painful and uncomfortable to dogs. Please take her into a vet in the morning.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It becomes concerning when an older dog develops blood urine that is non-responsive to antibiotics. Having blood in the urine with out bacteria can mean a bladder stone or a bladder tumor. Tests I would consider next would be a urine culture, one belly X-ray to look for a bladder stone and full blood work. If the culture is negative and the X-ray doesn't show a stone then I would worry about a bladder tumor. An ultrasound of her bladder would help diagnose if she has a bladder tumor. Another option before doing more testing is to try a more powerful antibiotic for 3 weeks. But if the blood is still present with out the presence of bacteria then I would go forward.
