My dog has bloody urine and strong odor. What can I do for UTI?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 9 years and 8 months old | 55 lbs

Dog, 10 year old Husky/mix rescue few years ago, has bloody urine. Very strong sour or fishy odor. Can't get to vet until monday. Any products at petsmart to buy for UTI? No visible discomfort or straining, stoll looks normal.

She likely has a urinary tract infection or possibly bladder stones. If you can't get her in any sooner than Monday and can't call them to ask for advice or to move up the appointment and she still seems otherwise okay, get her seen Monday. If she does start feeling sick or has trouble urinating, take her to an emergency clinic, just understand that at any vet right now the wait may be long unless she is an emergency and in very bad shape. I don't know of any products you can buy over the counter that will help, and using OTC products could actually mask symptoms that could help lead to a faster diagnosis when she does get to her appointment.

Poor guy. I too am worried that he could have a bleeding disorder, urinary stones, or a raging urinary tract infection. I would highly recommend taking him to your vet as soon as you can. They need to do some bloodwork and a urinalysis on him to determine what his current health status is.
Best case scenario is that he has a raging UTI, which typically responds to antibiotics. I hope your furry friend feels better soon! Best wishes and take care.

Poor pup! It does sound like he may have an infection or other urinary problem. I would recommend taking him to the vet to be seen once they open tomorrow morning - he will likely need a urinalysis to check for infection, and possibly additional testing depending on what is found. If he does have a UTI, he will need prescription antibiotics to treat the problem.

In the meantime, there isn't much you can do except take him out frequently and monitor to make sure he isn't developing any other symptoms. There are no over-the-counter meds that will be of any help, so the best thing is to take him to a vet as soon as you are able to.

UTI's can cause your dog pain, that's for sure. If you've ever had one yourself you might know that the burning sensation and pain in the lower abdomen are quite uncomfortable. The pain isn't terrible, for sure, but there's no doubt that Bella isn't feeling well. In addition, in a diabetic dog, UTI's can indicate that she is poorly regulated (i.e. there is routinely glucose in her urine) and having one signals that it's a good idea to check blood glucose as well, to determine if an adjustment might be considered in insulin dosage. Checking a quick urine dipstick can also ease your mind that she is not tipping over into diabetic ketoacidosis as well, which is a very serious condition. It's also worth noting that even though the same antibiotic is prescribed each time, when UTI's occur frequently the bacteria that cause them can become stronger, and more resistant to the normally-used antibiotics - this is why urine culture is so valuable in these cases, in order to make sure that the appropriate antibiotic is used. I would recommend that you get her in today, since it's another 36 hours since your regular vet opens, and that's a long time for her to be uncomfortable.

Yes, I would definitely take Kahlua into an ER vet. I would be very concern that if she is trying to urinate and nothing is happening that she may have bladder stones. Those can cause a blockage in the urethra, which is fatal without treatment. It could also be a UTI, but as I said, it's quite concerning that she is trying to urinate with nothing coming out. Please take her into a vet right away.

I would be worried this is a UTI, and no you cannot purchase medication without seeing a vet. Coco needs antibiotics if she has one, and that is available by prescription only from a vet. I would not monitor her for a day, UTIs are painful and uncomfortable to dogs. Please take her into a vet in the morning.
