My nursing dog has a hip sore after puppies. How to treat at home?

You can use a clean washcloth to gently remove any debris and keep the nipple clean. Monitoring the puppies and moving them to a different nipple when they try to nurse is also best to help the area heal. If it becomes infected, oozing debris, smelling, red and hot to the touch, etc, it needs to be seen by a vet to be more thoroughly cleaned and treated with antibiotics.

It sounds like she has a hot spot on her hip. She could be chewing/licking on that area because of allergies, a problem with her anal glands, fleas, etc. She should be examined by a vet to determine the cause and treat the problem. Your vet can check her anal glands and express them, if needed. Your vet can also inspect her for evidence of fleas and/or allergies. An antibiotic, anti-histamine, and/or a corticosteroid may be needed to help treat her problem and your vet can prescribe. Make sure to use a monthly flea prevention, like NexGard, Frontline, Revolution, or Advantage to prevent fleas and ticks.

Puppies!!! This sore could be several things - urine scald and another puppy suckling this spot are likely. Watch the puppies closely to see if another pup is suckling or if mom is excessively licking this spot. Right now, you can use some topical triple antibiotic ointment (a small amount) a couple times a day. If it gets any bigger or deeper, seek veterinary care. Thank you for using pet coach.

Ouch, poor Daisy! That looks very sore and quite large! I would have her seen by a vet for this pressure sore. I would be concerned that it could get infection and the vet can prescribe antibiotics to treat it. The vet can also treat the sore itself, and give you advice on how to reduce it. One important thing to make sure Daisy has a soft place to lie down. Laying down on concrete or hard surfaces all the time will lead to pressure sores, and she needs a blanket or a bed to lie on instead. Have her seen by a vet today or tomorrow.

I am very sorry to hear that Lucy is having these problems while she is nursing her pups. It sounds like you are very on top of the situation and attentive to her needs. Since the pups are four weeks old hey will have started to wean, which I can see you have done. This means that Lucy can have a break too. I would place a tshirt on Lucy and let her tears have a break for a couple hours each day. Since she was also warm I would watch for signs of mastitis. Mastitis is a bacterial infection of one, or sometimes more then one, of the milk producing glands in the breasts. Other clinical signs would be; Swelling Firm Warm Discharge (other then milk) painful to the touch Loss of appetite Lethargy Neglect of puppies If you suspect that Lucy could have mastitis based on the above clinical signs I would suggest taking her to see a veterinarian. The vet will be able to prescribe an antibiotic, antiinflamatory medications and pain relief. In the meantime you can apply a cool compress to the affected area. Do not attempt any over the counter medications or ointments as they may cause pain or delay healing. I hope this was helpful and more importantly that Lucy starts to feel better soon.

This looks like it could be a pressure sore from King lying on a hard surface a lot. Make sure he has a soft bed to lay down on. Keep an eye on it, and if it gets bigger or it appears to bother him (he starts licking or chewing at it), have him seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Keeping it clean is the best way you can keep it from getting sore/infected. If this is not possible anymore, then it may necessary to surgically remove it. I recommend having a vet evaluate it and see if this is possible, or if there is some other treatment options. I hope that helps and this gets cleared up soon.
