Newborn puppy weight normal? Do they need heat pads in warm weather?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! They could jut be more vocal during the day because of all the activity. I would try to keep them indoors where there is air conditioning and fans. If they have to be outdoors then they should be in the shade and not ever in the direct sun. The puppies should not get too hot as that is life threatening, so see what you can do to the environment to change the ambient temperature. I wouldn't recommend the ambient temperature higher than 80 F. I wish you the very best!

Puppies are prone to getting cold, so I would only do this if it seems that it's too hot in their environment. You can start with a low amount of AC if needed and turn it up if they tolerate it well. You will know the puppies are too cold if they forming a tight huddle next to or under mom. If they are more spread out, then this would indicate that they are very warm. Hi, and thanks for posting this question. Ambient temperature for pups that age should be around 80 degrees, so as long as mom is with them her body heat probably keeps it around that temp. If she will be gone for any length of time then you may want to increase the temperature slightly . Have fun with those pups, and thanks for using Pet Coach..

It's probably best to bring them inside, but it really depends on how warm their kennel is. If you can be sure that the kennel does not drop below 70 degrees F, then the pups should be fine. If you can't ensure this, then I would bring them inside to be safe. I'm so sorry to hear about your pup. First step is to warm him up. A Heating pad set on low with the cloth cover on will work. Other types of warm packs are ok too as long as there is a towel/cloth between the heat source and the pup. Keep heating until a rectal temp of 99 is achieved. Meanwhile, rub a small amount of white karo syrup or honey on his gums to help with low blood sugar. Between these two things he will hopefully perk up within 10-20 minutes enough to take the bottle/teat. Then feed as often as he cries. DO NOT try to syringe or force food until you are sure he is swallowing well as this can cause pneumonia if he accidentally inhales a little. Side note: I know it's silly, but be sure that you have poked a hole in the nipple of the bottle (many come with no opening which is weird). Sometimes, despite these efforts, a puppy will not respond and you will need to see the emergency vet for IV bloodsugar and fluids, etc. Even then, we sometimes cannot save them and they do pass. Many times these are the runts of the liver or we suspect there is something else going on (born with a congenital organ problem). Hope this helps and best of luck to you and the baby!

There is no need for a heating pad. Mama does a great job keeping the temperature just perfect for the babies. There is a danger that if you use a heating pad under the puppies the temperature may be too high and hurt the puppies.

The only way to make sure they are getting enough milk is to weigh the puppies every day and make sure the puppies are gaining weight. Neonatal puppies should have a weight gain of 5-10% of birth weight daily --they may lose a little the first 24 hours, but after that we need to see this weight gain. If they are not gaining at that level, they need to be evaluated, and if otherwise normal, supplemented with formula and tube feeding to achieve this weight gain. Sounds like everything is going great with Juliet and the puppies. Remember to feed Juliet puppy food during this time because her nutritional requirements are very high during lactation. Good luck
