Adopted dog coughing, sneezing, mucus. Is it kennel cough? Vet needed?

Coso is probably recovering from an upper respiratory infection or cold, or kennel cough. This may take another week or two to fully resolve. As long as he's eating and acting normal it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Should he stop eating, be lethargic or the sneezing doesn't clear up in a week or so then a veterinary exam is in order. Puppies often get sick when together especially in a shelter or rescue situation and heal quickly once in a home with better care and nutrition. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Kennel cough is an upper respiratory infection which sometimes can even affect the lower respitatory system or lungs. It is sometimes due to bacterial or viral infections. This is a relatively common disease in puppies especially if not vaccinated. It is contagious and usually dogs get it from other affected dogs. Coughing can of course happen due to other pulmonary conditions like pneumonia for example. I recommend that you have Naja evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may take thoracic radiographs and may prescribe antibiotics. Good luck and have a good day!

Very common in cats that come from a shelter setting even if they are vaccinated. I suggest you take him to a vet and do not go by what the shelter lady is telling you. He most likely does need antibiotics. Coughing is not really normal even if they have an upper respiratory infection so that is a bit concerning and it's best to have him checked out. Although there are many causes of coughing (heart disease, collapsing trachea, pneumonia, etc.), the most likely cause for the coughing given Emmie's history is 'Kennel Cough' or Infectious tracheitis. This is a viral infection that causes irritation in the trachea and a cough. It can become very severe such that the coughing prevents eating/sleeping and leads to weight loss and depression. If the coughing is severe you can ask your vet about anti-tussives (anti-cough medication). Sometimes this infection leads to a secondary bacterial infection, and the cough becomes 'wet' and at this stage antiboitics are required. I recommend a visit to your vet, x-rays might be required depending on how the lungs sound when your vet listens to the chest. Best of luck with Emmie.

This is suspicious of kennel cough, which is an infection of the upper respiratory system. The throwing up when coughing is normally seen when dogs have a bad cough like this. A dry nose versus wet nose actually does not a indicate a specific problem. Kennel cough is most suspicious if Chance has been in contact with other dogs in the past month or so. If Chance has not had contact with other dogs, then the cough is likely due to something else. They can develop a cough with more concerning conditions like pneumonia, heart worm, heart disease and cancer. For this reason, it's best to have Chance checked out by a veterinarian soon. They will be able to determine the cause of the cough and prescribe the appropriate treatment. If Chance came from a shelter, then they often offer a free vet exam within a couple of weeks after adoption. I hope that helps and Chance gets better soon.

Congratulations! Adopting a pet is wonderful. If coughing is bacterial or viral in nature, it may resolve in 10-14 days with or without treatment. The cough may linger longer. Ideally, Toby should be physically examined by your veterinarian to rule out other causes, such as cardiac disease or a collapsing trachea. If the cough is severe, a cough suppressant can be dispensed.

All of us in the profession are always worried about canine flu outbreaks. I would advise that if the condition worsens or doesn't resolve, have your veterinarian evaluate Jackie. There are many causes of coughing and having a thorough history would help narrow that down. Of course kennel cough, allergies, things in the air that are irritants, etc are all possible including many others. Again, with everything going on now across the United States, I would advise a trip to your vet's office with her. They can evaluate her and then advise some treatment or diagnostic testing to screen for a cause. They may advise fecal tests, blood tests, x-rays, or other tests to determine a cause.
