Adopted chihuahua coughing and gagging: Is it kennel cough or more?

Cough can be caused by an infection, heart problem or lung condition, it is important to first know the cause before treating it as treatment is different from condition to another. The most common disease causing cough is a viral/bacterial infection called Kennel cough, this disease usually resolves without treatment within a couple weeks but if the cough is too severe it is recommended to go to the vet in order to get cough medicine and antibiotics.

Poor guy. If the coughing is lasting more than 12-24 hrs, then there is a good chance Toby has a bit of an upper respiratory infection (i.e. Kennel cough). I would highly recommend taking him in to your local vet to get treatment, which usually consists of a short course of antibiotics to clear things up. Pet vaccinated with the Bordetella vaccine once every 6-12 months are protected up to 87% from contracting URI's, so this would be best to do once Tobby is feeling better. : ) I hope that your fur baby feels better soon! This is suspicious of kennel cough, which is an infection of the upper respiratory system. The throwing up when coughing is normally seen when dogs have a bad cough like this. A dry nose versus wet nose actually does not a indicate a specific problem. Kennel cough is most suspicious if Chance has been in contact with other dogs in the past month or so. If Chance has not had contact with other dogs, then the cough is likely due to something else. They can develop a cough with more concerning conditions like pneumonia, heart worm, heart disease and cancer. For this reason, it's best to have Chance checked out by a veterinarian soon. They will be able to determine the cause of the cough and prescribe the appropriate treatment. If Chance came from a shelter, then they often offer a free vet exam within a couple of weeks after adoption. I hope that helps and Chance gets better soon.

I would recommend you have Khali evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for this possibility and treat accordingly. This could be an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough , but could also be a sign of heart disease, especially if Chico is an older dog. Another very likely possibility is that Chico has a collapsed trachea. You will need to take Chico to your vet for an exam and x-rays (which will rule out collapsed trachea and lung edema caused by congestive heart failure). Your vet;s exam will also detect any problems with the heart, that may be causing the cough. Please cschedule an appointment with your vet soon.

Congratulations you bringing Alice into your family! That could be kennel cough but bronchitis or reverse sneezing could also fit this description. Monitor her very closely for signs of lethargy or not eating. If it does not go away after a week or so, if the cough worsens or she continues throwing up, have her examined by her veterinarian. Heart disease or primary lung disease are also possible but uncommon in a young dog. At home use a humidifier and air purifier if the furnace is running. Coso is probably recovering from an upper respiratory infection or cold, or kennel cough. This may take another week or two to fully resolve. As long as he's eating and acting normal it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Should he stop eating, be lethargic or the sneezing doesn't clear up in a week or so then a veterinary exam is in order. Puppies often get sick when together especially in a shelter or rescue situation and heal quickly once in a home with better care and nutrition.
