My mother dog eats her 8-week-old puppy's poop. How can I stop her?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sadly I think that Mocha has developed a taste for their stool and it is behavioral. I would clean up aggressively after the puppies and prevent her from access the room where she could eat the stool. I am assuming the puppies will be leaving soon for their new homes so this should be only temporary. There is no medication or preventative to stop this behavior. I hope this helps!

It is very common for a mother to eat the stools of her puppies to keep the area clean. As long as the puppies are growing well, eating normally and are not straining to poop I would not be concerned. If you are concerned try separating the puppies from the mother and watch for stool.

This is a common problem in dogs, and it is gross but not abnormal. There are a few things you can do to stop this behavior, like feeding a supplement that sometimes makes the stool taste bitter (see a link below). Thank you for submitting your question regarding Daisy. You have a couple of options to try to control this behavior in your puppies. Hopefully they will outgrow it, but not all will. You can try placing Forbid powder on both of their food. Another option is meat tenderizer on their food. Finally, scooping the poop in the yard as frequently as possible to try to limit their access to it. I hope this information helps!

It is to be expected that, with the extra demands of nursing pups, Aurora will need more calories and, therefore, will need to poop more often. It's one of the joys of having a litter that you get to leave your comfy bed during the night to take the mom out! Do not decrease her food intake, as she needs the extra nutrients. Just grin and bear it, remembering that this will pass soon enough!

This is a very common behavior, some dogs just like the taste. It can also be a sign of intestinal worms or a nutritional deficiency, so make sure Max is up to date on his deworming treatments and feed him a high quality puppy food. It sounds like Stella has intestinal worms which are common in puppies. Puppies with intestinal worms can eat their poop as well, but even dogs without intestinal worms eat their poop. They just like the taste. I am very concerning that she isn't eating anything, and due to that, I would take her into a vet immediately. It's quite serious when such a young puppy won't eat.
