My mother dog is attacking her puppy. Should I separate them?

IF you see that she keeps doing that you will have to separate the puppies from her and start feeding them yourself with puppy milk replacer that you can buy from any pet shop. feeding will need to be given every 2-4 hours and you will need to keep them in a warm environment.

It is best to keep the puppies away at this point so she does not keep doing that. You can start to bottle feed or lay her down and let them nurse under your direct supervision then take them away when they are done so she can’t hurt them

I would make sure she has a large enough space that they aren’t cramped. If the space is large and she has still suffocated them then yes you can separate her if she will tolerate this. Some dams will not tolerate being away from their young. I would let her be with the puppies supervised every hour to allow them to nurse if they want and to allow her to clean them. Given the chance that she could be a poor mother, I would not mate her again and have her spayed as soon as her milk has dried up. It would be best to keep momma dog and puppies separated from your other dogs, at least for a time, as new puppies around other dogs can be a cause of high tension and stress for the mother dog. With all the hormones from birth, plus protection of puppies, a normally friendly dog may accidentally harm another dog in the household in an attempt to protect her puppies. Once the puppies are old enough, you can then gradually introduce your other dogs to them, under direct supervision.

Dogs can become more protective when they have puppies. Unfortunately there is not really a way to stop this aggression as it is instinctual and hormonal. A better option is to keep strangers and other unknown persons and pets away from the new mother. Make sure she feels safe and that her litter is kept in a low traffic and quiet area. The more the mother is stressed, the more likely she will be to show aggression. This aggression will generally decrease as the puppies get older. If her aggression is to the point where she is dangerous or extremely disruptive, you may consider removing her from your breeding program and having her spayed.
