My mixed dog has German Shepherd markings. What's her true breed?

Congratulations on your new puppy! While it's hard to know just by looking at her, I don't suspect Rottweiler in the background. German Shepherds carry the gene for black and tan (like a Rott does) but this gene is modified by another gene for the saddle marking. Cleo did not get the gene for a saddle and so the black and tan is expressed normally. The best way to know for sure what is in Cleo's back ground is with a genetic breed analysis. I recommend the Wisdom Panel. It's just a cheek swab, no visit to the vet required! Please feel free to post any additional questions.

First you should know that breed identification by looks alone has been proven to be inaccurate 75% of the time. If I had to guess, I suspect a pit bull type breed and German Shepherd. However Boxer and maybe hound could also be present. If you want to know for sure, look at one of the breed tests such as Wisdom Panel. Beautiful dog!

Cute pup! This dog looks like a German Shepherd mix to me, possibly German Shepherd labrador retriever. There is no way to know for certain what breed a dog is (or what mixture) just by looking. I think he certainly could have some hound in him. I also think his face and ears look a little like a Great Dane, although he's not that large. I definitely can see the German Sheoherd. There are some commercially available DNA tests that can be fun and might give some other ideas although their accuracy is debatable. I think Wisdom panel is best http://www.wisdompanel.com

Maltipoo/lab i seriously doubt it, Chihuahua/lab i can maybe see it. The only way to know for sure if it is a pure breed is to have a DNA test done. many companies offer this service and the process is easy and quite cheap. this is just one example: http://dnamydog.com/

I see no evidence whatsoever of any kind of shepherd in his background. He is almost certainly a Sporting and/or Hound mix . . . could be an English or Welsh Terrier, Brittany, or Pointer mixture. Less likely, but also possible, would be American or English Foxhound or Harrier, or even Beagle! To be absolutely sure, you can have his DNA tested.
