My dog has high creatinine and heart issues. Is meropenem the cause?

Meropenem can be used in dogs but it is reserved for bacterial infections that have not responded to other antibiotics. Meropenem resistance is a growing problem in human medicine due to it's overuse and use in situations where it is not needed. It is expected to become an issue in veterinary medicine with time for the same reasons. I don't know why you want to use this drug in your dog but I don't recommend you use it unless treatment with other antibiotics has failed.

Also, they can be used together. However, terbinafine should not be used in dogs with pre-existing kidney disease. Please, discuss with your vet if the treatment should be discontinued or not. It is a worry that the creatinine is going up and your vet may want to change or stop treatment for Bruno, just in case he has individual sensitivity to any of these medications.

Using antibiotics is generally safe for pets with kidney failure, however Sofiya needs some aggressive treatment for her kidney issues. This could look like more testing, including an abdominal ultrasound, leptospirosis testing, checking for tick diseases, and other tests depending on what is going on with her clinically. It would also include treatment of IV fluids, anti-nausea medications, medications to lower her phosphorous levels, and others (again depending on how she's actually doing). In short, the Cefor isn't going to treat the issues in this bloodwork.

The elevated creatinine on it's own does not indicate kidney disease. Remember, this blood was taken at one second in time, he may have recently eaten or been a bit dehydrated at the time which caused the CREA to be a bit elevated. You can not determine kidney disease with just this one test. If you are concerned this should be repeated when he is fasted and a urine test should be done at the same time. I'm not sure we really know if creatine truly affects creatinine levels and kidney function but there is evidence out there suggesting that people with kidney dysfunction or problems shouldn't take creatine supplements. To be safe I would find an alternative product to use to address her joint problems. There are many supplements out there and I like the Nutra Max Laboratory products. These include Cosequin, Dasuquin, and other products. To my knowledge they don't contain creatine. So just to be safe, I would advise holding off on what you have and instead switch to another option. I like Nutra Max products because all of their supplements are produced under pharmaceutical grade conditions and all of their products are tested to make sure they contain what the label says. You can get them over the counter at the larger pet stores, at your veterinarian, or online. Good question, good attention to detail. Good Luck!!

That depends. Ideally a culture and sensitivity is run on the urine to identify what bacteria is present and guide what antibiotic should be used. However, this is sometimes cost prohibitive. Cefpodoxime is a perfectly reasonable choice if we don't have a urine culture to go off of, or if we don't yet have those results. If Laddie is eating,is not vomiting or having diarrhea, and isn't in acute kidney failure due to the infection, oral antibiotics alone are probably just fine. However if she is vomiting, is not eating, or is acting very lethargic, she should be re-evaluated by a vet. It is wise to monitor the creatinine value in the blood. If it is elevated, often dogs are treated with IV fluids as well as antibiotics. The creatinine can be measured daily with a blood test. I am so sorry Toby is not feeling well. Ehrlichia is a tick born disease that can cause a lot of secondary issues from the infection. Kidney disease acute (suddenly) or chronic(over a long period of time) can be hard to detect. The Ehrlichia can cause dehydration, anemia, acute kidney disease and even low platelets. The kidney disease usually resolves when the Ehrlichia is treated. However with a 14 year old dog I would be concerned that Toby had kidney disease that was undetectable until now. That would make it hard to predict if the kidney values will ever go back to normal. There are no specific drugs to lower the kidney values. The best options are intravenous fluids and antibiotics for the Ehrlichia and close monitoring. I hope Toby makes a full recocery
