Why is my dog's belly bloated for months and he's losing weight?

You do need more testing to find out what is going on. It can be fluid build up but you need blood work and an ultrasound to see if the fluid is leaking from the intestines or liver congestion secondary from heart disease. sometimes a diet change can help or the fluid may need to be drained to have it evaluated for cells. Without a diagnosis and more testing it is hard to help you further

It could be that he is accumulating some fluid in his abdomen. This could be from low protein, cancer, liver disease or heart disease. It could also be that his liver or another internal organ such as his spleen is markedly enlarged. Or, it could be nothing, and he's just changed the way he carries some of his weight over time and there is not an issue. The only way to find out is to take him to the vet. Since he's acting normal and otherwise doing well, and you can't afford it right now, I don't think you need to stress too much over it. When its possible financially , get him to the vet. It is obscuring his liver and intestines from being seen and there may even be a small amount in his lungs. Unfortunately it is impossible to tell what the fluid is from the x-ray alone. His blood work shows some abnormalities with his electrolytes, which may be if he is not eating or from fluid in the abdomen. Mara also has a high white blood cell count, these are the cells that are responsible for fighting off infections and increase if there is one present. Your vet can run some additional diagnostics, and perform a tap and remove the fluid as well as a blood test to determine if Mara is infected with FIP, a mutated form of a common virus that cats are exposed to. Hello, sorry to hear about Prince. It sounds like he may have right sided heart disease in which the blood backs up into his veins and the vascular fluid begins to leak out of the vessels. This generally leads to fluid in the belly causing abdominal distention, fluid in the chest, and subcutaneous fluid. Other causes of 3rd spacing can be associated with a low protein level either due to liver disease or loss of protein through the kidneys or bowel. It sounds like prince needs to have a full evaluation of his vital organs and this may include bloodwork, an abdominal ultrasound, a heart ultrasound, and blood pressure monitoring. Ultimately, Prince may need to be evaluated by his veterinarian or an internist to determine why he is having fluid accumulation outside of his vasculature. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Poor Marshall! It definitely sounds like something isn't right. There are many things that can cause a swollen stomach with weight loss and decreased appetite. Some possibilities would include heart disease, liver problems, cancer, or even internal bleeding. Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so I would recommend taking Marshall to the vet as soon as you are able to. If his belly seems distended and he is now acting ill, my concern would be that the swelling could be due to fluid in his abdomen (blood or free fluid), or a stomach torsion. This can be due to a splenic growth, liver disease, a toxin ingestion, or another underlying medical issue. If his gums are pale, not pink, I would have him evaluated immediately by a veterinarian, as it could be due to internal bleeding, or if he has non-productive retching (indicative of a stomach torsion). If his gums look pink and moist, I would still recommend he be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as you can to determine what the underlying swelling is, and what necessary treatment needs to be taken to resolve it. Fluid in the abdomen is usually caused by either heart failure, low blood protein levels, or cancer. Blood work should be done to check protein levels. A follow up appointment with your veterinarian soon is important, and more work up should be done to identify the cause.
