Can medicated shampoo wash off my dog's Advantage flea treatment?

According to the manufacturer..... Please wait 48 hours between product application and bathing. A non-medicated shampoo made for dogs is fine. Baths can be given as often as once per month without affecting the performance of the product. If more than one bath is given, the product should be reapplied after the second bath. Flea shampoo, medicated shampoos, human shampoo and dish detergents are not appropriate choices when managing fleas with K9 Advantix® II and may affect the performance of the product.

Frontline doesn't always work unfortunately, but a flea shampoo is not likely to give you a better result. Instead I recommend using Advantage or Advocate spot on, Alternatively a comfortis tablet will do an excellent job as well. Do not bath her at least 3 days before and after you apply any spot on. As these flea treatment do not contain the same active ingredients as the frontline, they are safe to use at anytime you chose.

Any topical/spot on medications should not be used 48hours before or after shampooing. These medicaitons work through the oils in the coat which are stripped by shampoo hence making them poorly or ineffective

Itching can be due to a flea infestation, so it's good to apply the flea medication. In cases of long-standing, or severe itching there is a chance that secondary skin infections may form. A medicated shampoo would be helpful for controlling infection, but would not be helpful for the primary cause of the itch. If you do use the shampoo, then it's best to do it before you apply the flea treatment, or at-least 48 hours after. Dogs are not supposed to get wet for at least 24 hours after application of a topical flea medication, and more than likely it was washed off during the bath. You can reapply the flea treatment, and I would give them Capstar given you have seen fleas. It's a one time pill that starts killing fleas within 30 minutes, and it's safe to be given at the same time as the spot on treatment. Just as a note, I would not recommend using Frontline. In my experience (and from the experience of many colleagues), there is a resistance to Frontline, and you may not get the best results from it. I recommend using Advantage or Revolution instead. You will also have to disinfect the environment. Wash their bedding in hot soapy water, and vacuum the furniture and carpet surfaces. You can use a spray to kill fleas in the house, such as Indorex, or a flea bomb would work well to kill the fleas in the home.

I would check the instructions on the package of the product you applied for instructions but most say not to bathe within 24 hours of application. I would be worried about overdosing as she would have absorbed most of the chemical already but some may have washed off. I would wait to retreat and see if there are any live fleas in a few days. You can continue treating with grooming with a flea comb and treated baths until the package says you can retreat (usually a month later)

The key to using the medicated shampoo is contact time. After lathering, the shampoo needs 10-15 minutes of contact time with the skin/coat before rinsing. The Dechra brand is fine. When there is an active skin issue bathing should be twice a week with using the spray or mousse in between. Once looking better, you can decrease frequency of the products.
