Can I use medicated shampoo for itching and flea treatment together?

If you bought it over the counter (OTC), no prescription is needed. Directions for use should be on the container. Do not bathe more often than directed since this may make the itching worse and can dry out the skin. Try to determine the underlying cause of the itch. This may require a visit and exam with your veterinarian. Causes may include skin infection, external parasites, allergies or food sensitivities.

All of the brands you listed are good shampoos. Duoxo is one of my go to shampoos but many are equivalent. A chlorhexadine/ketoconazole shampoo helps treat yeast and bacteria. The main thing is to lather Sibyl up and allow the lather to soak for 20 minutes or so before rinsing. If needed you can bathe every 2-3 days. I also recommend an oral omega 3 supplement such as Derm Caps. Remember if you use topical flea or heart worm prevention the medicated shampoos will strip it out. The medicated shampoo must have contact time. You need to lather it on and then leave it on for 10-15 minutes before rinsing. You also need to be bathing in this fashion every 2-3 days until the skin is looking better. Skin issues like this take a few weeks to clear up so you won't see an immediate response.

Hello and thank you for your question about Royce. You can use the shampoo but there are much better options available. Shampoos only last for 24hrs. Fleas are in the environment and have a very fast breeding cycle so it’s hard to get rid of them using shampoo alone. Frontline is a decent product but there are better products such as Simparica and Comfortis. If you have fleas, you will need to use these for 6 months. Cortisone cream is not meant to be ingested and that is the main concern with pets is that they lick it or get it on their feet while scratching and then ingest it that way. You may try something more natural like a little coconut oil. Rub it into the area well and try to prevent him from getting to the area. I would recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS Chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until resolve. I would also recommend using products such as welactin omega 3 fish oil, essential 6 spot on by dermoscent and malacetic conditioning spray. I hope this helps! It depends on the type of shampoo and how long ago the advantage was applied. But many medicated shampoos are designed to strip grease and keratin from the skin and those will certainly decrease the effectiveness of the advantage. If a medicated bath is necessary and it is close to time to reapply I would plan to reapply the advantage. Or speak to your vet about oral flea medications.

However, if Shiloh's skin is flaky and itchy, it could be a number of things, including superficial pyoderma, demodicosis, sarcoptes, yeast dermatitis, and ringworm. It is difficult to narrow down the causes without doing an exam on her or at least seeing the lesions, but it is very likely some sort of infection (whether bacterial, yeast, or parasitic) so I do recommend bringing Shiloh to the vet. Your vet will be able to determine the cause, and Shiloh will likely need prescription medication (antibiotics, antifungals, or anti-parasite, along with possible medicated shampoo) to clear the issue. Depending on the severity of the issue on her skin, it very likely might not improve without prescription meds, so it is worth having her seen as soon as possible. Additionally, depending on her age, she may have some underlying condition that might be making her skin susceptible to infection, such as allergies or hypothyroidism. I hope this helps.
