My dog had heat 7 weeks ago, but male dog still humping. Why?

It can take many weeks to even months for the hormones that are created by the ovaries to stop circulating within the blood stream. But then, some boy dogs are just obnoxious sniffers. Neutering the male may help with this behavior.

This behavior is often considered part of a dominance issue and can be seen amongst any dogs, even neutered dogs occasionally. Be aware that your puppy will be able to mate very shortly and you should consider neutering her or making arrangements to keep them separated for 3weeks when she comes in heat next

Male dogs are often confused by the discharge and pheromones immediately after birth. It is vitally important to keep them segregated to prevent injuries as the new mother is also going to be protective of her pups also

If your female dog isn't spayed, she could be coming into heat causing this behavior. Female dogs go into heat around every six months, and if you have had her for five months, it would be about time to go into heat again. This behavior will continue every six months unless you get her spayed, which I highly recommend getting done. Best of luck!

Yes it is normal, as Miley Jane is about the right age to come into heat for the first time. If you do not want puppies, I recommend having her spayed as soon as she is out of heat, which is typically within three weeks. I would keep her isolated from any intact male dogs during this time, even if you plan on breeding her at some point. It is never recommended to breed a dog on their first heat because they are not fully grown both physically or mentally. It's recommended to wait until a dog is at least two years before mating her. Have her seen by a vet soon if you want to spay her.

This is unusual in dogs. Typically smaller breeds have 2 to 3 heat cycles a year. I am assuming this is a new change in the frequency for her and that you are seeing vaginal discharge or bleeding. If so, it is possible these are not normal heats and that she has disease in her reproductive tract. I would recommend a visit to your family vet for an exam. Additional testing to evaluate her reproductive tract may be recommended such as vaginal cytology and abdominal ultrasound. Neutered males can display erections and ejaculate just like intact males. They may mount in a display of dominance or can still mount to breed in the presence of an intact and receptive female. Correct the behavior immediately (even though no litters will come of it) and distract or separate him completely from the female until she is no longer in heat. Consider having your female spayed in the near future.
