Why isn't my male dog interested in my female dog's first heat?

If you are unable to have one or both of the dogs spayed/neutered then you will have to be diligent about keeping them separated while the female is in heat. I would recommend keeping the female in the house and the male outside because if you leave the female outside there is a chance another male dog could mate her. I hope this helps. It's probably because Zeus wants to mate with her that he won't leave her side. Male dogs can sense when a dog is in heat, and they will be attracted to the female and stay by them so they can mate with them every chance they get. If you don't want them to have puppies, I would keep them separated completely until her heat is over, which usually lasts around three weeks. You can get him neutered as well so that puppies will not happen, but he would still have to be kept separate from her for at least three to four weeks post surgery. This is because he would still be able to impregnate her, he will not be sterile fully until after those weeks have passed. I hope this helps!

The male can mount her quickly and breed her if they are together for even a short amount of time. You may want to send him to a friends house or her to a kennel to keep them from breeding. If you have the two of them together while she is in heat, she may become pregnant. Even if they are from the same litter and are brother/sister, they will still breed if given the chance. Therefore, if you do not want them to breed, it would be best to either separate them completely while she's in heat, or have one or both of them "fixed." At 6 months old, your male dog can be neutered at any time. It would be best to wait until the female is out of heat, because the surgery is a bit more difficult to perform when the female is in heat as there is increased blood flow to the uterus. This is not due to stress it is likely due to the hormones she is emitting and what Anakin is picking up on. This is pretty normal. Protecting her from other possible males - doesn't matter if they are human. Doesn't even matter if they are male or female. This could get ugly fast and can turn to severe aggression. If you are not planning on breeding them I suggest you get them spayed/neutered as to not promote any behavioral issues.
