Is it safe to use my lidocaine rub on my Maltese for dental pain?

Hello, topical lidocaine rarely gets absorbed or is absorbed in very small quantities unless it is used in a wide are of the body. Local lidocaine use is considered a class B medication for use in pregnant animals. That is, there is no recognized risk for fetus, however adequate studies have not been performed in humans or animals to identify potential risks. I would recommend consulting with your primary care veterinarian prior to administering this medication on your pet. You may try applying an ice pack wrapped in a small towel to the swollen or painful area. I DO NOT recommend giving him any pain medications that intended for humans, as these can be fatally toxic to dogs. I recommend contacting your veterinarian during normal business hours to ask for other suggestions. If it has been this long and he is still painful, there may be a complication that needs to be addressed. I hope this is helpful!

No this is not safe to do. I would gently clean Archie's wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. To keep him from licking at it, you can put an Ecollar on him. You can get one at a pet store or make one at home. Keep the wound clean and dry, and monitor it for signs of infection. If you see redness, swelling, warmth to the touch, or pus, then it is infected and he will need to see the vet for antibiotics to treat it.

Topical lidocaine would be safe, but it isn’t going to help much with the discomfort of the tick after an hour or so. Even though they are a common pest, they can cause irritation and local infection, quite a bit of discomfort in the ear, and (cause anemia in younger animals). A topical tick preventative would likely be cheaper in the long-run than purchasing lidocaine sprays.

Hello, yes, anything you can use will help Lily. You can use a combination of products such as chews, wipes, water additives & dog specific tooth paste. If Lily's dental condition is severe enough, it might be prudent to talk to your veterinarian about adding antibiotics to the regimen. Using an appropriate antibiotic for one week, stopping for 3 weeks, & repeating will keep bacterial numbers down in the mouth & prevent the showering of bacteria into the blood stream where the risk of endocarditis might be higher because of her CHF.
