My new puppy's breed is unknown. How can I find out if it's purebred?

If your breeder didn't provide you with any paperwork documenting his parentage (such as an AKC registration certificate) then unfortunately there is no way to prove for certain whether he is purebred or not. If you want to try and find out "unofficially", you can have him DNA tested using a Wisdom Panel blood or cheek swab test. These tests aren't always completely accurate, but could give you an idea of whether Halo has any other breeds in his background :)

1) if your puppy has papers from a Kennel Club it is pure bred. If not you can ask to see the parents, or ask the owner of the parents to send you copies of the pedigree papers of the parents.
2) you can have a DNA test done by UC Davis through your vet.

At this age it is very difficult to tell if it is a pure breed. The only way to know if it is a pure breed is to have a DNA test done. many companies offer this service and the process is easy and quite cheap. this is just one example:

There is definitely some German Shepherd in him, but he could be mixed. The only way to know if it is a pure breed is to have a DNA test done. many companies offer this service and the process is easy and quite cheap. this is just one example:

If you have any doubt as to the validity of your dog's breed, there are companies available that perform canine DNA testing. The testing provides information as to the lineage and breeds that make up your dog. There are several companies that do this, all ranging in price, detail, and reputability. Beyond this, there is no positive way to identify Marley's breed without question. If you do find out Marley is not pure bred but the papers say otherwise, I would definitely confront the breeder or pet store from which you acquired him with the new found information.

Unfortunately we cannot tell if a pet is 100% anything without a DNA test. Also a pet this young is impossible to tell what breed it is. I would recommend having the pet grow up a bit and then have him tested when he is about 4-6 months of age. You can go to any vet of your choosing, although it may require you to drive a bit to get to if there isn't one that isn't affiliated with the breeder in your area. It sounds a bit ridiculous that your vet isn't willing to do a simple DNA test though, so I would look into getting another vet if this is the case. You need an unbiased opinion here and someone willing to do tests that you are requesting. I hope that you get things sorted out, and hopefully you have gotten what you have paid for. To accurately know your dogs breed it would be based on both of Duke's parents being registered with a legitimate registration organization like the AKC. That is the only way you could prove to someone buying Duke's puppies, if you chose to breed him. Without proof of lineage it is hard. You may have to wait until he is full grown to see how he looks. There are DNA blood tests that can help but personally I think the accuracy isn't the best.
