How to identify dog worms in poop? What do different types look like?

hi ,is there pictures of all the worms our pups and dogs could have? cuz when i look at the stool i know how tape worm look like there's other stuff in the stool looks like worms but it could be just garbage can you send pictures so i no what im looking at please thank you

There is no way to send pictures to you, but look up each parasite, & you will see good pictures of the most common worms present in dog stool. There are tapeworms, hookworms, whipworms, & roundworms. Hope this helps. Take care.

That is a good question. Most worms do not come out in the stool. We check for parasites by putting poop in a salt solution and the worm eggs rise to the top. Then we identify the eggs under the microscope. Sometimes dogs do vomit or pass roundworms which are long thin worms like spaghetti. The tapeworm segments are the ones that are more commonly seen, when dried they look like rice in the fur by the anus and on the stool they look like flat maggots. The best way to check to see if Hummer and Shaggy have worms is to bring a fecal sample to your veterinarian for a fecal test. Then they can prescribe the correct dewormer. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. These are tapeworms and they come from your pet ingesting a flea or eating another pets poop that has live tapeworms in it. It is contagious to other pets and people via ingestion of a live worm. You will need tapeworm specific dewormer such as Drontal or Praziquantel to rid this worm and a good flea preventative (Bravecto, Nexgard, Firstshield) is recommended. Usually tapeworms are gone after the first treatment as long as puppy doesn't get reinfected. I hope this is helpful! Take care now.

What worm is hanging from my dog's bum? Is it contagious to pets?

This looks like it could be a roundworm, they look like strands of spaghetti. This is contagious to other animals in the house, and if he has worms, it's safe to assume the others animals do as well. It also means the Safeguard is working to kill the worms in his system. I would make sure they are all up to date on their deworming treatments. I would give another deworming treatment two weeks after completing the first to ensure all the worms are killed. I hope this helps!

My pet has white worm-like things in vomit and poop. What are they?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is not possible to know this just based on a picture. My best guess is that these could be foreign objects (not worms) or worms. I recommend that you have Mishu evaluated by a veterinarian to work the vomiting as this may be due to worms for instance, or something else like a gastrointestinal foreign body, among other possibilities. My dog pooped clear worms. Could it be roundworm if he's active?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes! It does look like Brady is passing adult worms. If that is fresh stool and hasn't been sitting outside for hours. I recommend collecting a stool sample and having it tested by your Vet. The worms seem shorter and thicker than round worms so it is important to know if the is fresh stool or old stool since free living nematodes do come to eat stool. A stool sample (looking at the eggs) will help identify the exact parasite he is passing and then how to treat it. Dogs usually do acting normal when they have worms. He is only 6 months so intestinal parasites are common. I hope this helps and I wish Brady the best!

Worms in dog poop, or just fly larvae? My dogs are on Interceptor.

The longer feces sits outside on the grass the more likely free living nematodes will come to the stool or flies will lay eggs that become maggots. Interceptor is a great way to deworm dogs monthly. But to be 100% sure that your dogs do not have parasites, collect a fresh stool sample from BOTH dogs and drop them off at your vet to have them check for worms. Good luck!

My dog pooped a long, earthworm-like worm. What could it be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If you physically saw a long white worm come out with Suzie's poop, it is likely a roundworm. If you saw the poop a few hours later and it looked more like a small earthworm, it is more likely a fly larvae. If it's the first, check out a dewormer such as Sentry HC WormX Plus Flavored De-Wormer Chewables for Dogs, (Pet Co). Be sure to check that the product is labeled for Suzie's weight and age. Then just use as directed on the box. If it was the second, ignore it! Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Suzie!
