My dog pooped a long, earthworm-like worm. What could it be?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. These are tapeworms and they come from your pet ingesting a flea or eating another pets poop that has live tapeworms in it. It is contagious to other pets and people via ingestion of a live worm. You will need tapeworm specific dewormer such as Drontal or Praziquantel to rid this worm and a good flea preventative (Bravecto, Nexgard, Firstshield) is recommended. Usually tapeworms are gone after the first treatment as long as puppy doesn't get reinfected. I hope this is helpful! Take care now.

Those look like they are probably roundworms. She would have gotten them from coming into contact with infective eggs in the soil most likely. (From where another dog pooped and that poop contained roundworm eggs, then your dog was nosing around near where that was (even if there was no obvious poop on the ground, the eggs will stay in the soil). It is not a result of the food. You can get effective roundworm treatment over the counter. Look for a pyrantel product and follow the label instructions. Feed stores will generally carry it. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is not possible to know this just based on a picture. My best guess is that these could be foreign objects (not worms) or worms. I recommend that you have Mishu evaluated by a veterinarian to work the vomiting as this may be due to worms for instance, or something else like a gastrointestinal foreign body, among other possibilities. Roundworms and stomach worms are possible and can cause a significant amount of damage if left untreated. Additionally, roundworms are zoonotic meaning people can contract them through infestation with their larvae, necessitating treatment. As long as she isn't acting sick, just make an appointment to have her examined by a veterinarian within a few days and a fecal examination performed to determine what kind of worms they are and what the best medication is to treat Diamond for them. If she starts showing signs of illness, have her seen as soon as you can. Hope this helps!

The longer feces sits outside on the grass the more likely free living nematodes will come to the stool or flies will lay eggs that become maggots. Interceptor is a great way to deworm dogs monthly. But to be 100% sure that your dogs do not have parasites, collect a fresh stool sample from BOTH dogs and drop them off at your vet to have them check for worms. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes! It does look like Brady is passing adult worms. If that is fresh stool and hasn't been sitting outside for hours. I recommend collecting a stool sample and having it tested by your Vet. The worms seem shorter and thicker than round worms so it is important to know if the is fresh stool or old stool since free living nematodes do come to eat stool. A stool sample (looking at the eggs) will help identify the exact parasite he is passing and then how to treat it. Dogs usually do acting normal when they have worms. This looks like it could be a roundworm, they look like strands of spaghetti. This is contagious to other animals in the house, and if he has worms, it's safe to assume the others animals do as well. It also means the Safeguard is working to kill the worms in his system. I would make sure they are all up to date on their deworming treatments. I would give another deworming treatment two weeks after completing the first to ensure all the worms are killed. I hope this helps!
