Worms in dog poop, or just fly larvae? My dogs are on Interceptor.

Interceptor does treat some intestinal parasites such as roundworms and hookworms, so it's possible that this may resolve the problem. If you don't see any improvement in his stool in the next 2-3 days, it would be best to take a fecal sample to your vet for testing - some types of intestinal parasites, such as tapeworms or coccidia, are not covered by Interceptor and would require a separate medication from your vet to treat.

Intestinal parasites are spread in the feces of infected animals so as long as you sister is picking up after her dogs your dogs should be fine. Congratulations on your new puppy! I would recommend that she sees veterinarian for a new puppy visit. She will have fecal testing and see if she needs a deworming medication in addition to the Interceptor. She will also be started on her initial vaccines. I suspect the Interceptor tablet you gave is working and killing the intestinal parasites. That is why you are seeing them come out in the stool. You will want to keep her on it each month for the heartworm prevention as well. I hope this information helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Yes! It does look like Brady is passing adult worms. If that is fresh stool and hasn't been sitting outside for hours. I recommend collecting a stool sample and having it tested by your Vet. The worms seem shorter and thicker than round worms so it is important to know if the is fresh stool or old stool since free living nematodes do come to eat stool. A stool sample (looking at the eggs) will help identify the exact parasite he is passing and then how to treat it. Dogs usually do acting normal when they have worms. If you saw the poop a few hours later and it looked more like a small earthworm, it is more likely a fly larvae. If it's the first, check out a dewormer such as Sentry HC WormX Plus Flavored De-Wormer Chewables for Dogs, (Pet Co). Be sure to check that the product is labeled for Suzie's weight and age. Yes, the Interceptor Plus will affect adult worms but not larvae that are migrating. Dewormers can cause a"purge" of dead or dying adult intestinal parasites. You should have Rocket dewormed again in 2-3 weeks. Contact your veterinarian for a broad spectrum dewormer to clear emerging adults. Nemex or Panacur can be dispensed by your vet based on your dog's weight.

Based on the photo, these look like tapeworm segments. Tapeworms are harder to kill than most other intestinal parasites, so in most states you will need to get a prescription dewormer from a vet to get rid of them. As far as disinfection goes - tapeworms have an indirect life cycle, so they cannot be contracted directly from coming into contact with an infected dogs feces. Dogs normally get them either from swallowing a flea, or from eating roadkill or some type of rodent. So you don't need to worry about your yard - the best way to prevent tapeworms is to keep your dog on a good quality flea medication, and keep them from eating dead things outside. They cannot get tapeworms directly from the ground, so this should not be a concern :)
